Can I find a hack that will let the running boards stay out with the doors closed? I want to stand on the running boards to load the rooftop cargo box with all the doors closed.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

To keep the power deployable running boards on a 2023 Toyota 4Runner permanently extended, locate the switch controlling the running boards (usually on the driver's side door panel) and set it to the "manual on" position, which will keep the boards deployed regardless of the door status; check your vehicle's manual for the exact location and operation of this switch.

I did try that switch. It doesn’t keep the running boards extended. The choices are only automatic (which always retracts when the doors close) or off (which never extends

I tried stepping on the running boards prior to shutting the door, and if I stepped down hard, it locked the running board in the extended position. This is the result I wanted, but now I am wondering if this is in any way damaging the mechanism. Does anyone know?

I had AMP Research power steps on my Silverado and that's how I cleaned/used mine to wash for over 5 years without any issues

I just tried this. Put on auto. Open door. Switch to off with door open. Shut door. Magic.

Thanks for the suggestion. I guess I'll just use the step on method (while it is retracting) and hope it isn't damaging the mechanism.

Odd. Mine stays out and was excited to learn a new trick.

My switch is labeled "Automatic" and "Off." No "manual on" position. Maybe a different year or model?

Ok. What’s odd is I was an idiot and was resting my foot on the step for my experiment and that was enough to trip the safety. So you are correct. It does stow in auto and no, my limited is not special.
