To satisfy your curiosity, visit the 2nd Gen forums on Tacoma World. There have been a number of posts regarding debris found on the filters, as well as gunk accumulation on the VVT Solenoid valves. Make up your own mind because the naysayers here are not always right about this.

It will really depend on the maintenance history. I was quoted in this thread because I just did mine. I have 185K on my 4R with 5000 mile oil changes from new. I honestly could not tell the difference between the ones that came out with 185K on them and the new ones. You having a 2022 will more than likely be wasting your time and money. These are not a maintenance item, but again, MAYBE in extreme cases of abuse.

What would abuse of the VVT system even look like? Just lack of oil changes I guess?

Excellent. Yeah I change my oil every 4-5000 miles. Yeah the Toyota mechanic who told me changed his but he bought an FJ and had no idea how the car was maintained.

That's really it. The 1GR-FE is fairly bulletproof. However, the notion that ANY engine can go for 10-15K on an oil change is crazy. IMO. Sure, you can do it, but at what cost? I plan on driving my 2011 to 300K and beyond.

You'll have a happy, long life with your 2022 if you stay on that maintenance schedule. Cheers!

VVT filters are like oil change discussion for some people. It can’t hurt to change it but the naysayers will speak as if the end of the world will happen and a puppy dies if you do because it goes against what they think. Some say the same thing when you talk about a 5k mile oil change vs a 10k oil change.

There is a video by an actual Toyota tech that says you should change it on a high mileage engine. There is also a naysayer on this website that tried to claim he is not a real tech and only did it for the clicks to make money or some other conspiracy nonsense. It was obvious the naysayer I am speaking about had no idea what they were talking about when speaking about the tech on YouTube and leads to the point that anything they say can’t be trusted as they can’t get a simple fact correct.

In the end it’s your vehicle and your choice. All I know is if the idea is you dont need to change it but you do all your out is a few bucks and little amount of time. If the idea is they should be changed and you don’t you could be out lots of money and wondering if the few bucks you saved was worth it.

    Let the flame begin…….

I will agree that a 2022 will not have enough miles on it to be concerned about the VVT filter. I will also agree that proper maintenance on the engine with oil changes performed based on the usage of the truck per the maintenance schedule will lead to a long service life. But at some point, say maybe after years and mileage, it would be prudent to look at as preventive maintenance.

My 12' LE at 156k miles would be a perfect candidate in the near future. I haven't looked into it, but I also do frequent oil changes, so it's not a major concern atm.

In no way needed unless your 4runner is high mileage and service history unknown.

TW also has people that think adding a muffler from a Nissan VQ will make their truck sound like a VQ.

Nah, never. It's not a maintenance item just the like the PCV isn't but it made for a great video for likes, subscribes, follows, and patreon fishing.

Why do I want my truck to sound like a Frontier?

I got a Carven exhaust on mine, sounds like one of those douchebag modded BMWs.
