I know this is a silly question: I just bought a 2021 and it's at 77k miles. It was due for oil change at 80k. I am already getting the oil change soon warning at startup - but I should still have 3-4k miles left. Is this something to investigate further?

If you don't know when it was changed last, change it now, reset the light and then take it from there going forward.
The light generally starts showing up around 4500 miles after your last oil change provided it was reset and not 3-4k miles earlier.

It doesn't magically reset on its own.

If they changed oil before you bought it but didn't reset it keeps counting.

On my 2021 there’s two possible sources of an oil change alert.

    1. The Oil Maintenance warning in the dash is every 10k for me.

I can’t change it and it requires that dance with the ignition and holding a button down to reset.

    2. The oil and filter options in the maintenance tracker section of the head unit - but those alerts shows up in the head unit as they come due when the vehicle is started - is separate but another possible source. (that can be changed)

How do you know it's due at 80k? Sticker?

    Mall crawling kit.
Do you know many people that catch up on all maintenance before trading-in?

If you don't have a record from PO or dealer doing it, then assume it is overdue. Fluid change is always cheaper than parts change.

Every 90 miles for me. But I usually change it a couple times before it's due. Those Toyota engineers don't know what they are talking about...

Yes it's on record as service done by dealer with the certified inspection. I'll go ahead and reach out to the dealer to figure out whether the computer wasn't reset or if it was truly done.

The OEM says every 10k that's most likely why the OP said due @80k:notsure:

That "reminder" is a pain in the butt. At just under 5k miles I took my new '21Venture in for an oil change. The woman checking me out when I bought the 4R said to change oil every 5K miles, and I was headed out for a trip. The service people said "no, it's every 10K miles" to change the oil. So, I'm happily driving along on my trip and hit 5K miles, and all of a sudden all the lights on my instrument panel go out, the music stops, and a message appears that service is needed. I figured out how to get my instrument lights back on, but every time I stopped and shut down and then restarted the 4R the same thing happened. I was cussing Toyota for two weeks of travel and had to go in when I got home to get them to reset something to stop the warnings. This whole oil change nonsense with the 4R is a bunch of crap.

I believe Toyota does this for 4Runner because it needs 5000miles oil change for various reasons per service manual. For example they assume you buy a 4Runner to drive on dirt and dusty roads that require 5000mile oil change. But if you stay on on pavement and not hit any of the special conditions you can reset that message and see the regular info on your dashboard.

Yep, but then when you go in to get an oil change at 5K miles the service people tell me they won't cover it until 10K miles or one year since the last one, even though I do a lot of off-road driving
I suppose there is a simple way to reset the 5K warning so it doesn't recur every time you turn the ignition off, but I haven't learned that yet.

If you tell the dealer "I will pay out of pocket for extra oil change" the dealership will be more than happy to do so. Atleast the dealerships I went to.

I copied the youtube link with time line to 3:15 so it will go directly to the part how to reset this maintenance reminder screen.

Your entire instrument panel shouldn't be shutting off. It's just a warning that pops up in the display that goes away when you hit ok.

Also the 1gr has historically called for 5k oil changes. This changed when toyota started offering toyota care in the US. In an effort to reduce cost of (early) ownership and to give toyota a 50% savings on maintenance costs, they increased the interval to 10k. Just change it every 5.

It went dark except for the service needed message until I OK'd it. It startled me because I wasn't expecting a 5K oil change warning when the dealership had just told me to wait until 10K. I no longer have the Venture
