^So it's period-correct for the 4Runner, as the current platform debuted in 2002?

Does the warning clear itself after you put the OEM gas cap back?

Someone drilled a hole in my neighbor's tank (Ford truck) a couple years back to steal fuel. That same night someone cut a brake hose on a Grand Cherokee and we think it the same person thinking it was a fuel line. There are a few troublemakers out there so would like to have a locking cap to deter any shenanigans.

I installed a locking fuel cap shortly after I purchased mine in November of 23. I have received a few messages that my fuel cap had issues. I would stop when I had time, unlock and open it up, and the message would clear....until the other day. I got a check engine light, and a green flashing vehicle icon on the bottom of the info center display. My cruise control stopped working. I stopped by the local O'Rilley and had them scan it. "Fuel Cap" came up. So once I got home I reinstalled the original cap, unhooked the battery, waited 15 minutes, and reconnected the battery. It took two attempts to start and run normal, but all idiot lights were gone. Now I will only install the locking cap if my 4Runner will be parked in an iffy place for any length of time. Crazy....

I bought 2 gas caps off of Amazon. Both are MotoRad but one has a swiveling keyhole cover and one does not.

    MotoRad MGC900 (w/ keyhole cover)
    MotoRad MGC791

I installed the MGC791, my wife drove 12 miles to work and no problem. However, on her way back home the gas cap warning message came up. Comparing the 2 MotoRad caps the backsides look exactly the same so I think the quality of the seal is going to be the same on both with the only difference being the keyhole cover and cosmetic differences.

Does anyone have feedback on the one sold by 4Runner Lifestyle?

I have some feed back, would you rather have the gas thieves drill a hole in the gas tank, or put a hose down the filler neck?

Neither. FYI we don't leave the gas filler door open on our other cars even though they lock.

Thieves have moved on to catalytic converters. They'll also steal ditch lights, racks, ladders, and wheels. The locking gas cap is more for casual protection against tampering.
