:help::help::help:So last week, my serpentine belt popped. I thought it was an easy fix, but I actually ended up needing a new alternator too. So, I got my 4Runner towed & had it repaired. I picked it up the next day, drove 2 miles from the shop to my house and parked it. A few hours later, I go to leave and see that it’s leaking oil onto the driveway. I decide to take a look & it looks like oil exploded under the hood all over everything. I am not certain what this means and I make sure I have oil and I try to drive it to my brother in law… but it shuts off about .5 miles into my ride in the middle of the road. I get towed again… I apparently had a leak in my crank shaft from a piece of the serpentine belt breaking off and getting stuck/puncturing it. :angrygirl: This gets repaired. I pick my 4Runner up Thursday night and it smells funny on my drive home, but I figured it was probably from all the oil maybe… I drive it yesterday and it’s smoking some under the hood… on the back passenger side. I have no idea why… :notsure: today I drive it and it smells like burnt rubber, but I don’t see any smoke.

:help:So is this smell normal after all these repairs?!? I just don’t wanna cause any more damage by driving it if it’s still in need of more repairs…
All help appreciated. I’m lost as to which to turn to at this point… so that’s why I joined the forum!

    Thanks in advance! :)

Oil can take a long time to burn off and it will smoke a lot especially if it got onto the exhaust. If a piece of your broken belt got lodged near a hot engine component, it could melt. I would start by looking around the engine, paying particular attention to areas near the exhaust and heads.

Man, sorry this landed on your lap. What you describe sounds like a high school shop class did the work.

Constructively, advice from here is mostly guesswork (albeit some of it very educated) so it might be worth your time to have another qualified mechanic look over the work before the wheels fall off. Good luck.

    Welcome.

First. Get a new mechanic. If they didn’t properly clean up during the repair, they’re just throwing parts on.

Second, if the burning smell is rubber, then maybe one of the pulley bearings is seizing. I would get it checked or you may end up with another broken belt. If the burning smell is oil, then do a good engine compartment cleaning.
