    Sounds just like my Hypochondriac friend. He gives me :crapstorm: because I didn't change the oil @1k miles. I tell him the OEM says 10k. His response "they want to sell vehicles". I will do this one @ 5k because I'm not racking up those hiway commute miles like I have for years!:yes:

    10K change interval on a turbo engine is asking for trouble. Unless it is all long highway drives in mild weather, you should not be riding that oil for so long.

    Fact: turbo engines need more frequent maintenance intervals than NA engines.

    I didn’t make it up, it’s just physics. Thermodynamics, mechanical stress and shear on the oil are real things. This has been true for all of automotive history. Toyota, with all of their engineering prowess, did not find a way to overcome the laws of physics. I’m not going to get in to the 5gen vs 6gen argument. For the sake of discussion let’s say they both have the ability to be equally reliable if properly maintained. The turbo engines will require a shorter MAINTENANCE interval to be equally RELIABLE as the NA engines. They are more complicated, produce more heat, and will be under more stress during the maintenance interval. However, I would bet dollars to dimes that Toyota marketing division overrode the engineering division to keep the same maintenance intervals on the new gen as the old gen. Can you imagine the treads and press that Toyota would get if it updated the manuals and the maintenance cost doubled bc some of the fluid intervals were cut in half? It was never gonna happen bc they would be received as less reliable and “un-Toyota”. If I were buying a 6gen, I would accept the laws of physics and change the oil every 3k-5k depending on driving conditions despite what the maintenance book says. Anyone who says just follow the manual is not using their brain. Life is full of opportunities where just following the manual would be a bad idea. This should not really be a debatable point on the new powerplants! There are other differences that are worth debating.

    No, the 25MY vehicle is not for sale yet. The 24MY Tacoma is though. 10k normal intervals on that, 5k for special operating conditions. Have you heard of something different with the new 6gen 4Runner?

    No, I haven't seen the manual yet. But, the current version recommends 5K intervals for a lot of common scenarios. I figured the 6th gen manual will be the same.

    I guess I am a little surprised that they haven't made 5K standard for a turbocharged engine. It isn't like it's being pushed very hard, though.

    The manual only recommends 5k intervals for those driving on dirt or dusty roads. I think most people don’t believe they fit that category. I would say a 4 cylinder producing the numbers that this power plant is producing is actually being pushed when powering tacos and 4Runners and grand Highlanders. These are not small aerodynamic vehicles. Maybe they are stressed less in hybrids.

    I stand corrected...

    I see now that the new Taco manual does not recommend the shorter interval in nearly as many situations as the 5th gen 4Runner manual.

    I guess I shouldn't have assumed it would be the same.

    Taking that into consideration, I would agree that most should probably go with the 5K interval, whether or not they meet the criteria.

    Considering how modest the power is for a larger turbo 4 cylinder, I still don't have any concerns about the engine being over stressed. This engine was designed from the ground up for turbocharging.

    But, I would most likely do the 5K interval, regardless, as I'd be rotating the tires anyway.

    High load on the engine is only one of many issues that degrade oil. For turbo engine there are two main issues that are made worse - a) fuel dilution becomes a bigger issue due to increased pressures in the combustion chamber, b) higher internal temperatures of turbo expose more oil to thermal breakdown.

    If you want to read a manual, find one from a country that doesn't have EPA. Suddenly Toyota recommending different oil, different change intervals, etc.
