What do you carry in your 4R all the time and why?

The only thing in mine right now is a cell phone charger, it came with the first aid kit.

I really like taking this thing places with no cell signal. Hoping I will never get stranded and be forced to start walking, I keep the following in the truck all the time:
- Full suite of winch stuff - tow strap, tree strap, shorty strap, kinetic rope, pulley, 3x soft shackles, hitch shackle mount.
- Portable Air Compressor, digital inflator, chucks
- Tire repair kit
- Bottle Jack with a base plate and Safejack extensions
- Noco Battery Jump Starter
- Tool bag w/ everything I can think of, breaker bar, torque wrench with a deep socket for lug nuts
- Fluids: engine oil, trans, brake, coolant, penetrating lube, funnel
- Garmin Inreach
- Full size spare tire.
- Repair manual PDF on the phone

 

Condoms....you never know...

Inside an MTM dry ammo crate (MidwayUSA) ~13"x19"x16":
- stubby socket set
- assorted screw driver set
- pliers/channel locks/wire cutters
- 4" fixed blade knife
- hatchet/hammer
- NOCO jump starter
- small 120V air compressor (will quickly fill a bike tire - takes a little longer but will fill a 4Runner tire also)
- 25' extension cord
- jumper cables
- folding entrenching shovel
- work gloves
- also inside the ammo crate - a small backpack with a few small items inside it that I can put other items in if I have to leave the vehicle
- probably a few other small things I can't remember

Basic towing/recovery items in a separate bag: (I don't intentionally off-road - so this stuff is intended mainly to pull someone out of a ditch/out of a snow pile - it all cost less than $200 and last week I had to go over and pull my daughter-in-law's car off a snow/ice pile that my son unsuccessfully tried to drive over. That one use probably saved more money than I spent on the gear. This is all RhinoUSA and Ace Hardware stuff - nothing fancy/expensive)

- hitch receiver and a couple of 3/4" steel shackles

I put the ammo crate full of gear almost up to the back of the passenger side rear seat with a folded up blanket wedged between the ammo crate and the passenger side rear wheel well. I put the bag of towing/recovery gear just to the left of the ammo crate - the bag is about the same front to rear length as the ammo crate and not even half as high.

I put an extendable snow brush/ice scrapper and a small two piece snow/avalanche shovel between the bottom of the rear seat and the ammo crate/gear bag - this keeps the brush/ice scrapper and snow shovel from moving around. The full ammo crate and gear bag are fairly heavy and they do not move around when driving. NOTE: The MTM ammo crate has small rubber feet at each corner. I have the Toyota rear cargo mat in the cargo area and the rubber feet on the ammo crate lock into the texture of the cargo mat really well - the heavy ammo crate does not move even when making sharp turns/sudden stops.

In the winter I also throw a pair of Muck Arctic Sport boots in the back - but I can put those on top of the ammo crate if I need the cargo space. The ammo crate and gear bag take up maybe 25-30% of the floor space in the cargo area. With the brush/ice scrapper and snow shovel wedged between the ammo crate and back of the rear passenger seat they don't really take up any floor space on the cargo mat. With all this stuff in the back, I can easily get 4 overhead bin sized, rolling suitcases in the cargo area as well. Also, with just the ammo crate, gear bag, and other stuff I normally carry - I can get a large Lifetime 65qt (~30"x18"x18") cooler in front of the ammo case with plenty of room to close the rear hatch. I keep a few other things that I use more frequently in the bin between the two front seats - decent pressure gauge with bleed valve, folding knife, small stuff like that... - but wanted to point out that you can get a lot of shit in the cargo area of a 4Runner and still have plenty of cargo space left over if you put a little thought into how you stow it all.

 

And I removed my back seats!! How about dat, huh?!
