I’m thinking of starting a beer company named Use. It would only be sold by the case. Use Cases.

 

You could call the lite beer Useless Cases.

I agree, in so far as using a term or word incorrectly is an incorrect thing. Saying “ How are you going to use case those tires” is incorrect. It should be “how are you going to use those tires”. Another example of incorrect choice of words is “utilize”. You don’t “utilize” a screw driver to tighten a screw…you “use” a screwdriver. Utilize sounds fancified, but it’s just not the right word.

But I disagree, and take great umbrage to the idea that a field of study or work has the right to co-opt a term that is used broadly. To that I can only say, how dare you, good sir! An engineer does not have the right to say the word “stress” can only be used as an engineering term because it’s a term used to describe tension or forces acting on or between materials.

What if my use case for using use case requires I use the term to communicate the same concept outside of the field of software development?
