Good deal on a good oil

I am always skeptical about buying stuff like this from Amazon. Most often it's fake. Recently ordered Bosch Icon wipers and they were definitely inferior to the ones I picked up from AutoZone. Different packaging too.

How has your experience been buying this from Amazon? My oil change is due in next 1500 miles so I am going to be looking for oil soon.

 

I have concerns like that too. But this is sold by Amazon, not by a reseller on Amazon. I trust Amazon and Walmart themselves. Don't buy it from resellers on Amazon

 

It is a great oil, been using it in my Grand Cherokee for years. No engine related issues. Recently I switched from TGMO to this and the 4Runner likes it

Walmart has this at the same price. I agree, it’s good oil.

 

I use a high mileage oil. Does this come in a high mileage variation. From what I saw, only the Platinum comes in that.

 

Fulfilled by Amazon is still a counterfeit risk due to how they organize their logistics. Commingled inventory means they mix what should be the same item in from multiple sellers, including themselves, into the same pool that’s pulled from. That’s how people buy from a reputable Amazon seller and get a fake.

That said, I’m not sure I’ve heard of counterfeit motor oil.

 

Exactly! Every same item sits on the same shelf at the Amazon warehouse. The person just picks one up randomly and ships it.
The sheer volume of items and sellers of those same items probably makes it impossible to have a separate space for authorized resellers and random third party sellers.

 

I get supertech at Walmart never one single engine issue

 

Costco currently has their 4pk of 5qt jugs on sale for $64.

 

For those who aren’t particular, this is the way.

I end up buying them in-warehouse when the 2x5 qt boxes go on sale.

Typical price is $39 but sales can bring that down from a few bucks to several when they do show up.

 

Yeah, only Platinum comes in high mileage. I don't like extended oil changes by the way, but you do what you like

It's just a basic, no frills motor oil that meets spec. Hasn't killed anything yet, Blackstone didn't complain when I got some analyses done for the ol' Kia.

I'd say the odds are pretty unlikely - I've seen motor oil that doesn't meet spec from brands I never heard of but never heard of counterfeit motor oil.

Especially for a one-off I'm sure you'll be fine but I'd skip Amazon if I have a choice just from the fundamental trade-off their inventory system makes for speed and efficiency. Not all items are commingled but you have to look pretty closely. You can look at negative reviews if it helps but even then they're tied to item listings and not sellers if I recall correctly. (make sure the reviews are talking about the same item you're buying!)

 

When I said high mileage, I meant I use oil that is for engines with high mileage on them ie 75000 plus miles and not extended oil change intervals.
Still change every 5-6000 miles.

 

What would be an indication I could look for that this was good or not good? I've never sent a sample to Blackstone. Last three oil changes have been this oil. First two were Mobile 1.

 

Ive used nothing but AMSOIL signature series since I can remember, started when I ran drag cars (700-800HP) then moved to my everyday vehicles

 

I've been using Kirkland for a while now with no issues. (I know, anecdotal)

I like that online they sell a split pack of 2 5w30s and 2 0w20s that I can use on my wife's car and my 4Runner and it comes to my door with free shipping.

Motor oil is one of the most common things along with oil filters, air filters and plugs that are counterfeited and the market is flooded with them. Specially Castrol and Mobil one for oils.
You ideally want to buy from a brick and motor store or the dealership directly. Simply because if its a fake one that a store sells, it's a huge liability issue. So they ensure that they buy directly from the main distributor.Thats why the price parity at physical stores.

 

Buy from any reputable store or reputable online store and you will be fine. I'm sure it's not very prevalent.

 

Just don't be shocked when you see the oil turn black after like 2,000 miles, it's th amazing additives and detergents doing their thing. I experienced that with the tgmo as well, it turned into crap after only like a thousand miles. Crappy looking oil does not mean it is crap

 

I've used this oil for the past 6 oil changes. From everything I have read it's just fine.

 

I just use SuperTech from walmart. $18.xx/ 5 qt jug is an unbeatable price. My 4R, the wifes CX5 and the MIL's Tacoma all use the same 0W-20 so makes life easy.

 

I'm always skeptical of consumable auto parts, fluids, etc. from Amazon unfortunately, but alas that is just my opinion and that is not meant to sway other peoples purchase intentions.

I've been using SuperTech 5W-30 for a couple years now and have had zero issues.

 

I would trust their 20,000 mile Advanced Synthetic only

 

China makes fake eggs so yes there can be fake motor oil.

 

Just so you guys know, the SRT vehicles all come filled with Ultra Platinum from factory. It's a damn good oil and worth that bucks in my opinion
