Less than a month after selling my '22 ORP i'm looking for a new one now

Long story short, after a poor spontaneous decision, I'm trying to find a new '24 ORP or Pro from remaining stock in the spec I want and I'm getting frustrated with the slim pickings.

The few I've found have KDSS. My old one did not and now I can't easily accept spending an extra $1750 to solve I problem that I didn't know I had.

Found a new SR5 Premium nearby.... I just can't imagine not having a manual transfer case in a 4Runner. Am I crazy? What else will I miss in an SR5 Premium coming out of an ORP?

I would not consider a new '25 hybrid in a million years.

The SR5 also doesn't have Crawl Control, or Multi-terrain Select, but I could live without those, personally. A-TRAC is the only thing I use, and the SR5 has it.

The ORP also has a rear locker, but those can be added if you really need one later on.

The manual shifter is a nice touch, but the 4wd system still relies on an actuator in the front differential.

Also, the '25 will be available without the hybrid. But, it's still a turbo 4 cylinder, and a lot of folks here seem to be terrified of turbos. I'd wait a year or two to purchase a 6th gen either way just to let them work out the bugs.

I guess if you're looking to undo selling your 2022, you're going to have to:

    1. Pay for and live with KDSS if you want an ORP that's readily available. I personally think it's worth the cost. Have you driven one?
    2. Live with an SR5 with no locker, manual shift lever, multi-terrain select or crawl control.
    3. Keep looking

Okay, I will be that guy because none of you had the balls to ask: What was the poor spontaneous decision that caused you to sell or trade the 22? If you traded it in for something, then to get your man card back you are going to have to tell us what vehicle did you trade the 22 for? :anonymous:

I do lift kit installs on tacomas and 4runners every week. Also am a mechanic at a mostly Toyota truck shop. KDSS sucks to work on and is VERY expensive to repair if something goes wrong. It has benefits of better handling. Other than that, it's a curse that long term will suck to deal with.

Incoming kdss owners that are happy with theirs.

Contact jim from leasehackr.com. I tried to find a 4runner for days looking at every dealer in my area. No one had one, they were pre-sold or they were marked up way over sticker. I texted him and he asked exactly what I was looking for and 15 mins later he sent me two 4runners with the options installed and the sticker and his pre-negotiated price. He charges a 1k broker fee, but it was well worth it as the price of the 4runner was far less than I could have negotiated on my own. Dealership called me the next morning and confirmed pricing etc. I flew up and signed the paperwork and drove home with her. Kinda scary sending jim $1000 but he has 100s of reviews on leasehackr.com. If you need his info let me know.

I agree with some of what you said.

    But..

I can't imagine how difficult it is for a professional, when so many people have installed lift kits on KDSS equipped 4runners in their own garages at home. Sure, it takes a little longer. But, I'm sure you charge customers accordingly.

It also has the benefit of increased suspension articulation compared to the regular sway bars. Of course, if one is planning heavy modification, they should just skip it, especially if they'll end up deleting the sway bars.

It's definitely expensive to repair. But, it seems like the majority of failures are caused by corrosion on the accumulator, which can be avoided by keeping it clean.

I will also add, my thoughts after having KDSS for almost 6 years and 122K miles...

I think it's only really beneficial to a small percentage of buyers. People who want to do mild to moderate low speed off-roading, and keep modifications modest. And, people who like the added lateral stability. And especially those who want both of those things, which I did at first.

Now I'm starting to think about deleting the sway bars, so that's why I don't recommend it to anyone planning extensive suspension modification.

If you’re gonna lift it I would stay away from the kdss, I’ve heard of too many issues with a lift on them

I would say to avoid higher lifts with KDSS. I've been lifted on for over 80K miles. No issues. But, I'm only ~2.4" in front and 1.5" in the rear.

Move quickly b/c inventories are definitely drying up for good, and discounts on the few lonely remaining 4R’s are going away.

I’m guessing you won’t sell this next one for a long while, so don’t settle. Even if you technically don’t use all of the off-road tools on an ORP, someone eventually will pay you more for it on resale or trade.

You may have to pack a lunch and travel, but as of 9:00AM EST today, your next Gen5 ORP is probably still out there. Good luck, and don’t forget to share the pics!

The electronic case as fine if you exercise it. The manual case is just half manual anyway.

I think avoiding higher lifts in general on these is good advice. I've seen multiple professionals advise that 2" lift is ideal on these.

Half manual is a great way to describe it. Even so, it's still satisfying to engage in power crawl.

100%! So few vehicles are left that still have the lever. Even better is needing to get out and lock the hubs, I used to enjoy that on my old squarebody Chevy.

I got one! It's still at port. An ORP with the exact spec I wanted. No KDSS. Just gave a deposit and signed a sale order at MSRP. It must be one of the very last '24's built. Thank god.

Anyone want to buy an ANIB 2023 F150 Raptor?

I had a knob in my Ranger and Tacoma and didn't feel more powerful now with the manual case in my Runner. Actually I laugh because most owners complain that it moves around and one guy even printed a phone mount for his.

    THIS

It's a bit late in the game to easily get exactly what you want with the last few 4Rs on the lot. It is what it is.

If you are willing to buy used a world of possibilities opens up.

I also recommend getting in touch with a dealer that will do a nation wide search for a transfer.

90% of the 4Runner lifts are less than 2.5". So are 90% of the complains against KDSS because the lift shouldn't be more than 2.5". Always found this to be amusing.

According to the dealer my ORP (no KDSS) just got unloaded at the port yesterday. They were able to switch out some of the port installed stuff for me which was a hugely welcome unexpected surprise. Should be able to pick it up next Friday. I think i'll order tires today..... this is like deja vu for me. Other than a heated steering wheel can I expect any other changes from my '22 ORP? Have I already asked if anyone wants to buy a Raptor? :spending:

Ok, so let’s have the real conversation now.

why did you sell your 22?

And why did you buy a Ford?
    The big question.
