I am considering a teardrop trailer that weighs around 1000 pounds, but am concerned about fuel mileage. Does anyone here pull a trailer with their 4runner and if so what is your experience with fuel mileage and general handling/breaking of the combination?

My girlfriend and I just bought a Nucamp Tag XL which I think is around 1,300 pounds. Have only towed 2 shorter distances, so can't really help you on fuel economy yet.. but it handled just fine. My girlfriend towed it home from the dealer by herself and she said it was easy, no complaints (she's never towed anything before). I think you would only lose 2-3 mpg's (depending on how hilly your terrain is and if the wind is against you). But the low profile shape should definitely help compared to say a cargo trailer conversion.*You will definitely be in the slow lane going up steep grades :)

Here's a pic from our 1st test trip at the local camp ground.. with the other "big rigs" in the background

Nice rig that you have there. Thanks for your input, it's most appreciated. If you get a handle about how much the mileage suffers I would like to know. It's not the cost of the fuel that I'm worried about but the range with the relatively small fuel tank.

I pull a 5x8 enclosed trailer with my stock 2022 2 wheel 4Runner. The trailer weighs around 900 lbs. I usually get between 14 to 16 mpg on flat ground. Up hill around 11 to 14 mpg and downhill up to 18 mpg. I pull this trailer across country from NM to Pennsylvania and back. I am leaving NM on October 5th to make another trip to Pennsylvania. You will be adding a lot of weight to that teardrop too. But I would expect 10-14mpg depending on where you are/going.

2500lb or less is no issue for the 4R.

Oh yeah, completely understandable. I'll update you once we get a few trips under our belt!

2,300 lb squaredrop here. Recently averaged between 11 and 12 mpg on ~10 hours out and back along Colorado's I-25 freeway and 285 through the mountains. The rig handled fine.

I pull a 6x10 cargo trailer camper that weighs 1100lbs dry and maybe 1400lbs fully loaded. 15mpg consistently going 65mph.

Unik5, no, my trailer is not a camper build. I use it to haul my falconry birds and the gear to fly the birds. I am usually hauling less than 1500 lbs total weight.

JennyJo14, going across country we are usually doing a minimum of 70 mph, sometimes 80mph.

My offroad teardrop weighs in at 1,800 fully loaded. The roof rack/Pelican cases on the teardrop (not in these pics) stand in the slipstream coming over top of 4Runner. Between that, 2.5" lift, few hundred pounds of steel skid plates/sliders and 285's on both truck/trailer and mileage gets down to mid teens on highway and stays consistent until hit long grades (think Vail Pass).

I pull this square drop Hiker Trailer with my 4Runner. 5'X10'. Fully loaded about 2000Lbs. Tongue weight about 400Lbs.
Many folks don't believe it but we do have real mountains in Arizona. The rig pulls great and right behind the 4R,no swaying.Hiker at Cochise Stronghold.jpg Hiker at Cochise Stronghold.jpg Hiker at Lee's Ferry AZ.jpg Hiker at Lee's Ferry AZ.jpg
