2024 Transfer Case Leak

Not the first post I wanted to make. Just sold my 2015 4Runner Trail edition which gave me zero issues for 9 years.

Noticed oil on the garage floor with my new 2024 ORP (30 miles on it).

Appears to be from the transfer case. Has anyone had to deal with this before?
Pictures taken facing the front of the truck, so this is on the rear side.

 

Nope. But I'll bet the dealer has. Make them fix it. Don't let them give you some line of bullshit like "it's normal". It's not normal.

 

Take it back to the dealer and have them deal with it on their dime.
Make sure that it is documented for any future issues that might arise. ^^

I would take a picture of the drip on the garage floor and a sample, even a paper towel wipe, with you to the dealer.

AFAIK I think that is a speed sensor or something like that on earlier models. Nothing in that spot for us, just a plug. Should be an easy fix, likely a gasket replacement. Dealer should have you covered.

 

Might be that rear flange too tho. That would not be as easy a fix.

 

No matter how hard I look at those photos, I'm not seeing the leak and/or drips being referred to. I wonder if the OP has made an appointment yet...

 

In the photo on the left here's a drop in the mid- to lower left corner of the red square that has some light glistening on it. In the photo on the right, it's roughly in the vertical center, but still a bit to the left of the horizontal center.

 

Sorry OP, my 2024 is not doing the same. Mine was an early 2024 build as I bought in in Oct/Nov of 2023.

 

Update: Dealer verified gear oil to be leaking from the transfer case. Found oil leaking from a deformed cover of the speedometer driven hole.

Installed a new COVER SUB-ASSY, SPEEDOMETER DRIVEN HOLE 33403-35230 with o ring.

 

^Cool. It's a simple replacement with one bolt. My 2010 seeps from there, insufficient to form a drop.

BTW, 2020+ 4Runners have the updated VF2CM transfer case with beefier components than the VF2BM in your 2014.

 

That's on the transmission, not the transfer case no?

 

Can you please site a source for that information? When I search vf2cm all I see is Tacoma Tacoma Tacoma.

 

Dealership wrote the paperwork up as gear oil leak coming from the transfer case.

 

VF2A - Lever actuated (you have the old school shifter knob) part time case (OffRoad's, ORP's, Pro's, Trail Edition's, etc)
VF2BM - Dial (electric) actuated part time case ( TRD Sport, Anv Edition,SR5 )
VF4BM - Dial (electric) actuated full time (torsion center dif) case ( Limited )

If you have access to a bootleg 2020-2024 (not 2016-2019!) factory service manual, it'll list the VF2CM transfer case in the section heading; that would be the definitive reference. The PartSouq.com part catalog also shows many different T-case component P/Ns for 08.2019 onwards - output shaft, extension housing, output flange, seals, etc. It's important if you own a 2020+ 4Runner and for example, need to replace a leaking output shaft seal. Reading a DIY guide intended for older-year 5th gens, whatever PVC pipe seal driver dimensions they recommend will be too small for the 2020+ T-case.
