Just stop with the "Use Case"

A "use case" is a concept used in software development, product design, and other fields to describe how a system can be used to achieve specific goals or tasks. It outlines the interactions between users or actors and the system to achieve a specific outcome.

It is not how you "use case" your 4Runner, or what tires you can "use case" for mud. Your "use case" isn't gravel roads, and a third-row seat isn't the best "use case" to haul your kids to the mall.

Every time you "use case" the phrase incorrectly online, a kitten dies.

 

Reading this gave me a flash back to high school. When we would watch Newhart and drink every time they said the name Daryll. We could drink every time you type "Use Case"! That is, if I still drank...

I never englished good so as long as I think I know what they're talking about I don't care.

Now, if there using they're incorrectly, their may be a problem with me judging you. But I'm just some rando on the interweb so nobody should care about that either

That said, Oxford says “a specific situation in which a product or service could potentially be used.” so I say it still checks out despite its software engineering historical context.

But I do appreciate the energy.

 

If OP is a historical context purist, and they work with software and/or systems (judging from the knowledge), I wonder what their feelings are on using the word robot?

 

What if my use case is to cause someone else to die? Do I say "use case" a few more times or do I still have to page them?

When we're done with "use case" we can tell the OP we put new "rims" on our 4runners today. That seems to be a sore spot too.

The overuse of use case doesn't bother me as much as use case itself. What was wrong with application, purpose, scenario or hundreds of other synonyms already available? Onboarding is another one of those dorky terms- training or learning are just fine.

 

I freaking hate it when new terms are created just to look “smart”.

everyones use case is different. I want to know what specific use case is before we decide if it can not be called a use case.

 

People can have a use case for which the 4Runner was not developed for. Then can still try to use it for that, and that’s still their use case.

Thanks for the link. That thread seems to have petered out shortly before I joined so I hadn't seen it. Only hit the first and last page but it looks like a lot of good material that I can piss away a day of reading.
