    Hey all.....
    Quick question about Tire rotation.
Do I have to Criss Cross my tires when I rotate them, or can I just switch back & front?
Or, if I can do either or, which way is best for the life of the tires?
I have free rotation, but I don't want to go back to where I got them.
They tightened the lugs so tight that I needed a breaker bar to break them free, which is not good for the rotors.
The pic is the actual tire.
As always, any wisdom is much appreciated.

Are you doing a four or five tire rotation?

You can just go front to back, if you prefer. I think the typical pattern is to drop the fronts straight back, and bring the rears across and forward.

    I do a Z pattern:

    DF->PF, PF->DR, DR->PR, PR->DF.

It's not typical, but this way every tire changes direction at every rotation. My tires have been wearing great and having excellent tread life since I started doing it this way.

I've never crossed them just front to back and never had issues with premature wear.

I like the rearward cross here personally. Been doing it that way for years every 4-5k and I've had zero cupping issues on all kinds of ATs. Best part is you can do it with a single floor jack on the frame and only have to lift twice.

Some directional tires can only be rotated front to back - check your tires to make sure they are not directional if you are doing the crisscross rotation :mudding:

interesting, I guess I use the front wheel drive rotation. I drop my spare, use that as a place holder on my rear passenger, rp goes to df. Df to dr, dr to pf, and finish with pf to pr and spare back up.
Does it really make a difference or can some one explain why using the 4 wheel-drive way Would be better than the front wheeled way.

Just FYI, those tires are not directional, so you don't have to worry about that. Are you doing a four or five tire rotation? Have you checked your owner's manual?

How can they say equal wear with the 2nd diagram? The drivers side new get a break, unlike the passenger

That's probably just to make it dummy-proof, in case anyone would install directional aftermarket tires.

Rotating is overrated. I've found 5k mile rotations to be a ridiculous number.

    I'm rotating every 15-20k.

Got 80k miles out of my last tires.

Typically you need a 17"+ breaker bar to loosen lugnuts torqued to 83 ft-lb. What's the problem?

Before I got my 1/2" impact I needed to use a breaker on lug nuts as well.

    True.

I think it depends on how you're using the breaker bar. If you can break them free by hand with an 18" breaker bar, they are probably fine.

OTOH. I had tires installed on my ex's TC at a shitty budget tire shop called Mr P's in Milwaukee once, and I had to stand and jump on the breaker bar to free the lugs. I'm not a big guy, but 200# on a breaker bar should be more than enough to loosen a lug nut.

I never thought of it that way. I like to think of it as a Z because it's easier to remember the direction everything is moving.

Plus, I always think of "In Living Color" and laugh while I'm rotating them.

Yep. Front to rear per owner's manual is good enough. Rear tires wear faster because the vehicle is RWD most of the time.

    upload_2024-9-18_21-55-4.png

Any other reason for uneven wear on any individual tire would be caused by alignment or pressure being off, in which case you should correct that defect rather than trying to subject other tires to the bad condition.
