Total newb observation here but in researching stuff for my new Gen 5, of all the forums I found I felt like this one yielded the best quality in answering my MANY search questions.

I read that post too quickly at first and and thought it was "this thread" yielded the best quality ...

I was dumbfounded for a second there.
    And yes, welcome

Oh, I broke the rules even more than that - I only read the first page then skipped to the end to post...and ignored everything in between! I may be new to this forum, but not to forums!

PS, thanks for the welcome! ;)

But the real question always is, did you build them by yourself, with some help from an adult or you got to help the adult build your car.

as a Cubmaster, it was pretty clear which cars fit into which category.

Pinewood derby is why my son got into scouting, and helping run the even was what helped keep him in Boyscouts.

Natural progression. You can always tell what dad and son team had the good tools, experience and creativity.

First car always represents what a Dad can do with a little help from his Son and his vision.
2nd car represents what a Dad & Son can do together.
3rd car is what the Son can do with guidance.
4Th is what a son can do on his own compiled from experience and there own creativity.

Totally, the Pinewood derby was a big one for my Son really enjoying Cub Scouts and advancing onto Boy Scouts. Probably what gave me the momentum to Eventually attaining Eagle.

I wish that was always true, I saw how good some dads got over the years. My favorite cars where the ones the kid did, they barely went down the track, paint job looked like a drunk spray painted while they were passed out, but the kids could tell a great story about building it.

My dad wouldn't let me bring a car that looked like a child made it, lol.

We worked together on them, but there was obviously some experienced woodworking at play, and always a high quality paint job.

It was also fun screwing around after the races and finding that some cars would go faster in reverse, and I remember at least one time the car with only 3 wheels touching the ground was the fastest.
