My manual for my 2017 calls for GL5 75wt oil. Anyone ever use a 75-85 synthetic? I also want to use synthetic in front and rear diffs.

Any off the shelf 75/90 will do just fine.

I use Mobil 1 synthetic. Any quality gear oil should work.

Should keep track of names that say any quality oil is fine for the gears but raise holy hell if OEM engine oil isn't used.

I wouldnt do it. Use the recommended lube. I use Redline MT-LV.

Its Low sulfur formula lacks the reactive sulfurs found in most GL-5 oils that cause damage and is safe for brass synchronizers

Funny I was at the dealer today rechecking an alignment. I asked my service advisor how much to change the oil for the front diff, as I was already there. He quoted me almost $400! He said I had to change the front, middle and rear diffs. Lol! I was like, "what did I miss?"

    Cheers,

    Sean

lol, save a little more and you could just regear.

I have a theory that when you get a crazy quote like this, it’s just them telling you they’d rather not do that job.

Does the manual really say to use GL5 in the transfer case?

I thought it just said to use Toyota's liquid gold.

my 2022 TC calls for specific fluid. See pic. Only the front and rear diffs get gear oil like a 75W90

At some point in the recent past Toyota went from saying the same gear oil as the diffs could be be used in the TC, to the current recommendation for OE liquid gold, and nobody is sure why. That’s why this debate even exists.

Maybe Toyota changed the material used for the synchromesh ring, and now it needs a different formulation? That’s my best guess.
I’m biased towards that particular possibility, since I had TC failure that seemed to involve the synchro (brassy glitter and synchro related parts found in the oil).
