    I do this internal and weight also. Not necessarily cuz it's in the manual. Cuz what do those stupid ass toyota engineers know. They made the 4runner forever with the absolutely wrong tire size and suspension, right? Lmao

    I run whatever brand is on sale and 10k changes per the manual. Worked in my Tacoma over 230k trouble free miles and still going

    That's what I was using too. 5W-30 isn't much thicker. One step up. I read 0w-20 circulates 6 times more a minute than 10w40 or 20w50. It's probably more important to filter it more. I wouldn't use anything that heavy in Toyota. It uses 6.6 quarts of water cooled engine oil anyway. That in itself should double oil life. Then using synthetic that doesn't break down in heat, it can probably go 20k. That's why they last so long. We would see people who came to dealer, who did basically nothing maintenance wise until the have to point with crazy mileage still going.

    I didn't mean you, I meant the OP saying the heavier weight is better because he thinks it's quieter. (Or those guys with sawdust, or the mechanic that suggested a heavier weight to quiet my Isuzu, when it really needed some valve work).

    By federal law the car manufacturer cannot recommend an oil viscosity that is different then what is used during EPA testing. Hence xw-20 recommended in the manual. xw-20 won't hurt anything, nor will the xw-30 that used to be the recommendation.

    Yes, that's the standard interval for normal operating conditions. But, most of my driving doesn't fall into that category...

    80 mph on the highway is a lot less taxing on the oil as it relates to oil change intervals than 25 mph in traffic.

    They do, but the manual recommends 0W-20 in the US. It only recommends different viscosity for certain operating conditions and in Puerto Rico.

    Right but some are saying "cannot recommend an oil viscosity that is different then what is used during EPA testing" yet they do and have and not just for specific areas.

    I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. They probably did the EPA testing with 0w-20, and that is what they recommend.

    Edit: I would assume this only pertains to what viscosity they recommend for normal operating conditions.

    If 0w 20 gives better fuel economy, then it
    has less friction.

    Modern engines are built to closer tolerances/clearances. They do not need "thick" oil to maintain lubrication and oil pressure

    So pretty much anybody that drives around town where it doesn't get above freezing in the winter should be doing 5k changes if they're not on the highway much?

    That is the best explanation yet. And it makes sense. For the MPG certification,of course they would use the thinnest oil that they can get away with for the last couple tenths of mpg. If they recommended a different weight, it could possible change the mpg rating, so a bin no-no. Anyways, I run what I want, I just keep it in the same certification.

    Haha! Yeah, it sure seems to cover a wide range of fairly common uses.

    My thought is that if you are only running those types of conditions some of the time, you're good with the 10,000 mile changes. If you are operating in those conditions most of the time, a 5,000 mile interval might be a better choice.

    I have my roof basket on all summer usually. I also have around 800 lb of constant weight in or bolted on the 4runner. I tend to drive on Dusty dirt roads every couple of weeks. And, when I am off-roading, I can be in 4LO for hours at a time. So, 5K seems appropriate.

    On my previous 4Runner, I didn't do any kind of serious off-roading. I did hit gravel roads several times a year, towed occasionally, and probably was loaded fairly heavy a couple times a year. But, I went with 10,000 miles changes and synthetic oil and it ran great at 257,000 miles when I traded it in on my Tacoma in 2017.

    Like the manual says, I think that 10,000 mile changes are probably fine for the vast majority of owners. I do the 5,000 mile changes because of my driving habits and that's when I rotate my tires anyway.
