I am driving (solo) to Moab Utah in mid October from Orlando FL in my trd off road 33" MT, 3" suspension lift, high clearence winch bumper. I have a permit and camp site for 1 night at Murphy's B to drive the white rim road.
    Questions are :
They said to go to the islands in the sky visitor center to print my permit before will they have some idea as to current trail conditions?
Should I bring extra gas? I plan on going all the way around.
Last one is about some type of satalite phone? I will be alone on this entire trip.
Thanks for any insight or experience you have.

I’m literally at Moab right now. Doing part of White Rim today. I always carry extra fuel. I’ve never needed it but I did give it to a jeep just yesterday. I live by that saying it better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. It’s so beautiful here. The trails are tough but the beauty is worth it. Take time to stop and take in how beautiful it is

Same. I've never needed gas myself. One time I gave a bunch to a side-by pretty far out from anything. He was really happy. Good on ya

Ok, yes to extra fuel then. It's no problem for me to bring some like I said it's just me and an air mattress in the back of my 4runner for 1 night so weight and space is all good.

You won't need it but if you have room then why not have it along. I took my old YJ around this trail and didn't have any problems with gas. It's been many years since I ran it but back then the trail was easy and I spent 98% of my time in high range.

The saying "I'd rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it" is my moto as well. So if you have room go for it. You never know when someone else might need some help. Enjoy, that's an epic trail!

Solo a lot myself. Have a dog, Garmin inreach and some bear spray. So far have only needed the dog.

We've done the White Rim Trail several times in a 1989 Isuzu Trooper (very capable 4-wheel drive) and once in a gas hog 1999 QX4 Infiniti (way worse gas mileage than a 4Runner) and never came close to needing extra fuel as long as you top up the gas before you leave Moab. You can drive most of it in 4H but there are a few knarly sections requiring 4L. You can get some wild weather and washed out roads though so be prepared for anything! :eek:White Rim Trai.jpg

White rim trail loop is only 100miles. Barely any side adventures.

Why would you need extra gas? What’s your mpg? You can drive in 2Hi most of the time…

no satellite phone needed. If you do the popular trails (white rim included) there will be plenty of people - cyclists, local outfits, and people with sedans and “overlanding” rigs

you will find that the white rim trail is a fun day trip for many people.. there is nothing exotic about it.

Did White Rim in April this year. We did this over 3 days and took my time with my 17 year old son. Had him drive a lightly modded Tacoma with an Al-Cab topper/rtt. He drove about 90 miles of the route. Started at Shafer and camped night one at Airport after spending most of our day in Arches. 2nd night potato bottom camping area. 3rd day drove out for more state park sightseeing. Despite the post above, IMO it’s a hard day trip for most rigs pushing hard all day. Motos do it pretty quick. There are sights to enjoy and it’s cool learning about the geology and ancient peoples that lived in those areas is something to absorb. I had a paperback guide book for the route that pointed out items of interest. Take a nice swim in the Green River, hike to ancient ruins, enjoy a night camping remote. Soak it in. Entered with a full tank came out a third left. Didn’t carry fuel. Had Garmin inreach just in case. It’s nice to disconnect. I traveled all the way from the northeast and we enjoyed every minute. Nothing too technical, be on your game up and down Hogback Mtn section. YMMV. IMG_4631.jpg IMG_4684.jpg

Just did white rim today. (Part of it). So beautiful. Like I mentioned. I carry fuel and extra water. It’s hot here right now. Today it was cloudy but still made it to 93. There are a lot of people on the trail so safety is not an issue. We also carry bear spray but have never seen anything. Yesterday we saw what appeared to be a mountain lion paw print. We sleep in our 4Runner. Like I mentioned, I did have to help out a jeep who ran out of fuel but fortunately I’ve never needed it. I still bring it with extra water and food. I have external mounts (rotopax) to haul the fuel and water. If you have room, bring the fuel if you don’t I think you will be fine. Just fill up before hitting the trail. We have encountered great people on the trail. People will stop you just to talk about the trail ahead and anything they’ve encountered. It’s so beautiful here. We are doing 1-2 trails a day. I did upgrade my bump stops before coming and I’m glad I did. Some of the trails are pretty bumpy.
