How big a deal is it to install a locker in a 4R? Is it pricy? Can a novice do it at home with the aid of some YT videos? Would it be best to install one in the front or rear pumpkin? What's for dinner?

This is too much work for a newbie IMO. Starting with the need to have many tools and understanding what to do when something goes wrong, and for a newbie, this won'be intuitive at all. I said get it done by the professionals and do a regear job while you at it if you are serious about this stuff with lockers etc. Good luck.

How much of a novice are you? Do you have a shop press to install bearings and ring gear? Propane torch to remove ring gear? Dial indicator to check backlash? Dial torque wrench to check pinion preload?

On a scale of 1 to 10 (where 10 is rear-steer rock bouncer), how hard are the trails you plan to tackle?

If you don't have a clue what I posted, then you probably shouldn't try to install a locker yourself.

OK. I used Google Translate to get what ever you said into English and it seems pretty easy. Maybe if you could just be more clear. Here's the translation below to help other people understand you as well.

    "
How green and unproven art thou, fair knave? Hast thou in thy trove a press for to smite the gears that spin and behave? Dost thou wield a brazier’s breath, hot as dragon’s sigh, for to free yon circlèd gear where it doth lie? Hast thou a dial of reckoning to measure the lash of yon clashing wheel? And dost thou own a torque-stick’d wand for to test the pinion’s zeal?

O, upon a scale from one to ten, where ten be a fearsome rock-stomp’d fen, how treach’rous be the paths thou’lt wend, through moor and crag ‘til journey’s end?"
    "

Lunchbox lockers are easy. ARB or E lockers require specialty tools.

Well shit, I guess chatbots are taking poet jobs too. Not only that, but it correctly inferred what was being referenced regarding “backlash”. Specifically, when translating “backlash”, it knew it was referring to pinion and ring gear, so it translated “lash of yon clashing wheel”. That’s a clever little bot.

I told chapgpt to translat it to something that sounded like old english. Then asked it to make it sound older a couple times. Then asked to it make the whole thing rhyme. Finally found a use for AI

Sadly, despite all of that, the OP is likely not helped.

OP, usually folks do the regear and then throw a front locker in the process. If you have a rear locker then opening the front diff for a locker alone is not worth it. If you are SR5 then that's understandable. Did A-Trac fail you? It is a pretty potent tool, give it some more time, or maybe get some mudterrains, you will be amazed howngood A-Trac is.
Oh, don't do it yourself. Also, don't go to an offroad shop. Go to a gear shop whose only job is gears.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
The TruTrac in my old 4R has transformed it into a sleeper, it works fantastic and doesn’t require any hoses or wiring. Maybe I missed it, but what generation of 4R do you have?

OP doesn't have a 4R yet, probably looking at the differences amongst the trims and weighing his options. Could be cost-driven or maybe he wants a Limited with locker (which was a thing with 3rd gen).

    If you break it down:

    1. Disassembly (easy)
    2. Re-assembly (moderate)
    3. Have it work right (hard)

    Here you go.

I had a Yukon Grizzly locker in my FJ Cruiser. I removed the third member myself and took it to the shop where I bought the locker to have it installed. They charged me $250 for the install. Absolutely worth it to have the piece of mind knowing it was done right. I have the tools and knowhow to remove the third member, but no clue on backlash, ect.
