    One thing that really annoys me about in-dash GPS is that on a highway half of the screen is blocked by a black box with nearby exits info (fuel, hotels, etc.). GPS only does this on major highways. Is there a way to disable this and have it only show the map?

    One thing that really annoys me is that;
    now I have to pay $80/year subscription vs 20 bucks sd card from Amazon for my 2019.

    What do you mean? I have disconnected DCM (meaning there is no data connection in the car) and GPS still works. It does not do search assist (or whatever that feature called), but it does take an address typed into destination box and shows directions. As far as I know there no subscription for GPS in 4Runners.

    I heard other Toyota models, like the a new Prius, require Connected Services subscription for GPS to work. I have not verified this myself.

    Don’t know on my 4R because I haven’t had it on the interstate yet but my GX has the same system and if you push the map button it goes back to full screen.
    And yes that black box is annoying.

    Have you looked if there a way to update maps via OBD?

    I already tried that, it repeats last voice direction.

    I think the maps can be updated via USB thumb drive. I remember reading about it but I don’t remember where.

    I have a video how to update firmware with thumb drive but do not know how to update map data for 2020+.

    Try this: While in Map mode press the third icon down on the left (it looks like a grid with a circle and up-arrow). Then select “Map Mode”. Then select “Map Only”
