Wow that is pretty bad. I just wondered if all the domestic truck guys faced the same issues. Apparently so

2014 Neglected by the previous owners 2020 is an abused former rental... 2023 New I've been buying above my pay grade ☹️
Being a Southern Californian, rust is scary.

In the vein of watching horror films, I watch a YouTube channel called South Main Auto where the owner, Eric O., constantly shows relatively new GMC, Ford and Chevy vehicles looking like complete crap. He's in New York. And what does a shop owner drive for himself? A Toyota.

I also watch The Car Care Nut. He's near Chicago. It sure looks like Toyota has better undercoating. It might be inspired by some of those past failures where frames were rusting out (I think Tacomas were recalled for that) and they were putting new frames underneath at a very great expense...

Yeah the car care nut just got a new GX and had his buddy coat the frame. Wonder what product he used.

What are the areas or parts that shouldn’t be sprayed?
I want to use Surface Shield. It is a lanolin based oil.

Hi Spice, Was very happy with the fluid film. Was going to do the wool wax for a change and see if there was a difference. Just me why I was going to change. But as of now I have not done anything to my 23 because since I have retired now and my vehicles are kept in a heated garage and I’m capable of washing it from driving it in winter weather I don’t feel I need to add it now.

Thanks for replying back. I live in Ohio and drive all over the surrounding states. The salt just ruins everything here. I do have a monthly subscription to a touchless car wash, but I don't think that's enough. We'll see what it looks like after a year or 2

Not sure if you know this but what I read up on with the fluid film you probably don’t want to hit the under carriage too much cause of washing it off. Some say it better if you can do the fluid film yearly. When I had the fluid film on my other Toyota’s I did not hit the undercarriage to much. But I think it’s really helps. There is so much debate out there what to use.

BettyWhite how close are you to Pittsburgh if you are in Ohio; there used to be a great place that put on fluid film there i could look up again if you are interested. Or alternatively if you are closer to Detroit let me know also I found a great place up here.

Hey Mac...I actually just had it done this past sunday in Canfield, Ohio at a place called Ohio Rust Dr. They had great reviews on FB and a couple of people mentioned them here.

Thank you. I will need to find someone to put on aftermarket stuff. The dealership I bought my runner at tooke them almost 2 hrs to install the rack. I get it, dealerships don't usually put mods on. I just hope they remembered to waterproof around the nuts and bolts and didn't forget to put the rubber spacers. I'm scared that in a couple of years I'm going to hear water sloshing around my roof or leaking into the cabin. :rain:LOL

They are inferior and in some cases cause more damage/rust as the moisture gets under the coating and is trapped and invisible until the metal is so rusted the coating flakes off exposing an eaten away frame.

The same guy also said that because 4runners are built in Japan, the frames were made better than the frames on the Tacomas and tundras because those were made like in Mexico and Canada. Supposedly Japan filed a lawsuit against these manufactures because they gave Toyota a bad rap and they were not building them to Japanese specs and integrity. IDK.

BTW - I love the Car Care Nut

Ohio Rust Dr sprayed completely through the frame, frame horns, body pan openings, rockers, doors, lift gate and under the hood. They also use a lanolin based spray

Underneath is where most people focus their attention on corrosion protection. There are a number of other areas that generally get missed though. Look closely at that post and you'll see most of them based on what I see working at a Toyota dealership.

    BTW: Nice color choice!

The Tacomas are an open c channel frame due to the rusting issues, the 4Runner is fully boxed frame so if anything the 4Runner frame is more prone to rusting. Dana made the frame for the Tacoma and made it with subpar Chinese steel hence why they rust out so horribly not sure if Dana or someone else makes the 4Runner frame but if you don’t treat your frame with lanolin oil like woolwax or fluid frame yes your 4Runner will turn into a rust bucket

Just had Krown Undercoating installed on a new F550 Dump Body, so far I have been pretty impressed. Driving gravel roads I dont see nearly as much debris sticking to the frame, it is cleaner then the Wool Wax I used on the Tacoma and 4Runner. Krown recommends yearly touch ups and total cost for the F550 was $250 and that included the underside of the dump body.

I didn't go with Krown, I didn't like the idea of drilling into the doors and door jambs
