Jason- if you purchased the tires new (I haven't gone back in the thread history to look), did they (or anyone) comment on mounting the tires following the color-coded dot protocol? e.g. yellow closest to the valve stem. I asked a new Discount Tire employee about it one time and he had no idea what I was talking about.

i mentioned the yellow dot alignment to valve stem on 8/23. If the techs dont do that, they’ll be chasing weights and balancing.

I'm well familiar with the concept (have been building motorcycles and other vehicles for a long time) but I haven't said anything to them because I never want to be that guy who tells someone how to do their job. I give them a chance first.

For the second balance job, I asked them to "rim match" or rotate the the tires 180deg on the wheels to see if they get better results.

    Looked at me cross-eyed.

    Yellow/red dots are long gone.

My opinion is that the tires themselves are shit. No way having 7 or 8oz of weights is reasonable.

    Will report back after tomorrow.

sometimes you have to be the asshole to get the job done right. I have no problem telling someone how things should be done or double checking their work. Wish i could afford to have a changer and balancer in my garage. Id be set for life and not have to worry its done right.

but seriously, dots are on the tire for a reason and the yellow dot goes to the valve stem.

    Yep.

I've been doing my own motorcycle tires for thirty years. Simple drop balancer and a truing stand. I hate paying for poor workmanship.

The markings on this set of tires are long gone.

Understood. I believe there is another measurement they can get from the balancing machine (runout perhaps?). If this number is high, it also points to bad tires. Might be worth mentioning while you are there.

Found someone who gives a shit at the shop today. Supplied the table I posted and said how can you account for this?

Said he'd do it himself on the RF machine and share the results with me.

    RF variance was 15, 17, 26!, and 32!!!.

They are replacing two of the tires as defective. Will get them next week.

Wait wait wait, but I heard road force balancing was for hacks.

(Was that this thread, or a different one? They're all blending together these days, spending too much time online).

I'm glad they're helping you out with those.

I don't know how I can convey these two facts to you any more clearly:

    1) I have been building and repairing motorcycles and cars for over thirty years. I KNOW about the yellow (and sometimes red) markers and how to install tires

    2) The dots on THESE tires (since I purchased them in May) are NO LONGER THERE. They've been washed off, worn away, faded, or abducted by aliens. Tire shop has RF machine that does rim to tire matching anyway.

Follow up: Had two of the tires replaced and all four RF balanced again.

Shake is almost entirely gone but can still get a wiggle when coming off throttle around 60mph. I'm going to chalk this up to sensitive steering gear in this truck.

Lessons for the next set of tire I purchase for this truck:
    • Don't buy BFG tires ever again
    • Don't got to America's Tire / Discount Tire in my area
    • Accept that I'm gonna have to take the wheels off and clean off all the old wheel weight adhesive with solvent
Spent the last four Fridays on this bullshit.

Hi, always good to see a fellow Hoosier! So my 2023 SR5 came with the Dunlop AT20 Grandtreks, and it's primarily a highway tire with pretty good traction on the trails and logging roads I travel on my property. I think the unspoken thing here is the 'cool factor' -- it's not a very sexy tire, when it comes to AT tires. I spend a lot of time driving highway miles so these are fine for me, especially since I don't do any real rock-crawling or steep terrain kinds of stuff. But if you like that look, the tradeoff (as you've surmised) is a louder, but much more capable and better looking, all-terrain tire. As soon as I find one that doesn't sound too loud on the highway I'll probably switch myself.

I've been driving my friends' jeeps and 4Runners with more aggressive tires on them to see if I like them, but so far they're all louder than I want to hear when doing the 90% of my driving, which is highway and around town. I'm watching this thread for a suitable alternative too. Good luck in your search!

Nitto Terra grappler G3 just came out. No idea if they’re good or not.
The G2 that came on mine are okay overall but not great.
I think I’ll go with toyo at3 or falken wildpeak when it’s time to change

looking good. Just curious why you were running such high tire psi (42) originally and 38 now on a SL tire?. Is the 38 cold psi? Once it heats up you might really be back to 40-42 psi.

38PSI seems to give tad better mpg and steering feels a little more responsive. But 36psi feels nice over small bumps.

mainly just too lazy to adjust the psi at the moment. With winter coming in a month they will most likely be 34-36psi in morning when its freezing outside and im driving to work and by mid afternoon will probably be 36-38psi when warms up.

Anyone on here running the bfg trail terrain's? Would be curious to see what they look like on a 4r

I have KO2's on my jeep that i use for off roading stuff, but for the 4r I want a tire thats a little better on highway and snow when i go up to the mountains. Figure the trail terrain might be a good fit for that use case but havent seen a ton of feedback on them
