New oil filter longer than the one the dealer installed

Hi, I have a 2019 4Runner Off Road and decided to change the engine oil myself.

IMG_20240905_194059601.jpg When I removed the old filter element I noticed it was shorter than the new one that I had just purchased. The old one is about 2-1/2" inches long and the new one is 3-1/8". The tube in the center was sticking out of the old one, but I think the new element will cover the entire tube. I've verified that I am supposed to be using the 04152-YZZA5 which is the one I received, but can't understand why the dealer would install the shorter one. I read somewhere that dealers sometimes use a YZZA1 by mistake or because there were none during the pandemic, but I got my oil changed 6 months ago.

Also, the housing was torqued on so tight I needed a breaker bar to remove it!

I haven't installed the new filter until I get some feedback.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Yeah that's the A1 filter. That's why most do their own changes.

Why would they do this? To save costs or they didn't have the correct filter in stock? I have about 10 000 kms (6500 miles) on that filter. Should I be concerned?

When I bought my Sorento from a dealer (used) it came with an undersized oil filter. I plan to change all fluids and maintenance items myself now upon purchase ASAP.

SOBs are still doing that crap?
First time I changed mine it had that short filter in it. That was in 2015. Turned down the free changes after that and I've been doing my own since.

that why i change my own oil. They just dont care. Slap on a filter, the wrong one, and blast it down to 200 ft lbs.

You just discovered the difference between the factory where your 4Runner was built, with great attention to detail, and a dealer who only cares about making a quick buck.

I've read here on this Forum where they mistake (?) and use the shorter filer for the RAV4 instead of the longer one for the 4Runner. Apparently their part numbers are the same, less one numeral/letter. When I take mine in for an oil change, I have them show me the filter first.

Lack of attention to detail by 10 year old oil change boy. Reading is fundamental if you don't know. He apparently didn't. Mine had Chinese metal filter housing and my filter didn't fit right either. It had a short filter and I was puzzled how it was even circulating properly let alone filtering. Replaced with Toyotas OEM plastic housing and A5 fits correctly now. Oil change guy was probably like a drive thru service. He assumed parts guy did his job correctly so he just used what he was given and assumed he was doing his job correctly. I can't pay for assumptions. Reason I change my own.

A1 filter used in the 2GR is significantly more common (Tacoma, Camry, Highlander, Sienna...). The lube tech does 15 filter changes a day. After a while they all look the same...

He should be able to recognize part numbers after a while. I did 33 oil changes a day covering for oil change guy, but I'm attention to detail, photo memory type. Can't get fast until you get a good efficient routine. It was a lot easier with 2 racks. Mine uses A5. I think when my filter was to short it was just circulating oil and not filtering. I don't know how it could not seated on top and bottom of canister. I want a remote oil filter kit and screw on filters. Next project.

I don't remember if it was you or not, but here's the replacement skid plate bolts I used. Longer because of my diff drop, but they screw right in stripped skid holes.

A few years ago I decided to buy a Baxter spin-on adapter. They aren’t cheap, but super solid. This isn’t mine, but this is still a 5th gen with one on it. All you see is the 1” black aluminum part right above the filter. Been loving it.

I had a transmission filter on a truck like that before. How much and is it inside engine compartment? Nice if Metal Tundra filter would fit. Big Wix is good to. I have read about it. I guess after the radiator and intake I will finish with that.
