In the past, I always purchased oil in 5quart jugs with wide mouths. These were nice for recycling used motor oil.

Now I'm getting Toyota 1qt containers -- what do you put the used motor oil in after you drain it, as it is not very practical to fill 1qt containers with used motor oil?

I guess I could use a 5gal bucket with a lid and ask them to return it to me when I take it in. But one place that takes used oil, we simply drop it off outside the door ...

Take it to your local vato zone or similar. I remember when all those places started using Covid as an excuse to stop taking it smh

I collect it in a drain basin and pour it back in to the newly emptied fresh oil containers via funnel and return for recycling. It takes a few minutes to fill the empty quart containers but no big deal. Part of the process.

I use an old 5 gallon gas can. When it gets 1/2 to 3/4 full I bring it down the block to Mavis where they take it. I do like your 5 gallon pail with a lid idea better if you could find a top with a spout like the hydraulic fluid comes in.

Use the jugs your new oil came in...

Use a funnel if you can't get it in the hole.

This is also what I use. Works great, holds multiple oil changes worth of oil. Only have to make a trip to get rid of it about every year and a half.

It's been really sturdy and fell over once as I was driving like a maniac. It didn't leak at all.

Oddly, I have had the exact same journey. I started out with that Blitz container. It served me well, but then I started caring for more than one car and I bought that exact same white container. I run mine down to the dump and poor it out periodically. I place a Pig Mat underneath in the garage because I drink a lot when I'm doing wrenching.

Waste management in my neighborhood supplies us with free containers and picks them up full of used oil on trash day.

I have a cheap 10? qt and 16 qt drain pan/container combo from Walmart I use.

Not great for frequent use and the pan area on top is perpetually oily (duh) but good enough for me.

Not sure if it's nationwide, but New York State requires anyplace that sells oil to take used oil for recycling.

Used to. That just recently got shut down as part of them trying to be "clean".

So now the dump. We are so slow to update laws etc they probably will catch up and prohibit the dumping maybe in 10 years or so.

I use something very similar. After I've changed the oil, I take it to the local household hazardous waste center. They have a spot where I can empty the container myself.

The same magazine who said that led in the gasoline is not dangerous for humans. And to be fair in the 1960s they didn’t know about synthetic oil.

Isn’t the oil in the absorber box going to eventually end up polluting the ground or water?
Around here the waste oil is generally burned in waste oil furnaces for heating garages or warehouses. I guess you don’t have much need for making heat in Hawaii.

Holy shit that's retarded. I know they bitched about the US Navy using that island for target practice, but the idea of hundreds of thousands of Hawaiians putting their used oil in glorified kitty litter so it can go to the dump is even worse. Fuck me I'd burn it in a fire pit before I'd throw it on a dump surrounded on all sides by coral reefs and forests.

If you live on the mainland, get one of those oil catch pans that doubles as a container, it's worth the extra $10
