Found this discussion after speaker static issue in my brand new ‘24 Limited. Turned the vehicle off and restarted and it went away. So dang frustrating after reading these posts. Hopefully someone will find out the cause and get a final resolution.

I previously posted about this back in July 2023. Have a 2023 Limited that I bought in Jan. 2023. This issue happened twice in the first 5 months I had the Limited - once about a month after I got it (~Feb/Mar 2023) - then again about 4 months later (June 2023). It is now Feb. 2024 and it has never happened again in the past 8 months. Both times it happened - shut off the engine, restarted, then normal operation. Was going to take it back to dealer if it happened again - but so far it hasn't. I think it has something to do with the amplifier in the JBL premium audio system that is in the Limited and Pro trims. First time it happened I had just started the engine one morning to back out of the garage. It was winter, but not terribly cold, and the 4Runner had been parked in the garage all night - so was probably about 45-50degF in the garage. Second time we were on a road trip to Nashville, TN - probably more than half way there - so had been driving for ~250-300 miles that day. It was early summer not very hot - but using AC. Had stopped a few times previously on the trip. Stopped at a rest area to use the restrooms. When we came back to the vehicle and started it - got the static noise from the speakers wihtout even turning on the sound system. Shut off the engine, restarted, then normal operation again. Both times it was at vehicle start up - never had the static start after the sound system had been turned on. Once was when the 4Runner had been parked in the garage all night, once was after having driven 250-300 miles. No temperature/environmental extremes either time. Really no rhyme/reason or anything tying the two instances together for me.

One thing that can cause behavior like this is startup times of system elements differing from design assumptions, or some element failing to correctly initialize on startup. If the timing margins are thin or there's a component out of spec, the occurrence would be more or less random.

Got the same issue on my trd pro. I recorded the sound and plan to tell the dealership. It happened two times, I had the car for 2 months only.
There are no patterns based on all the comments except for the fact that it only happens on TRD pro or limited. So I think as well it is an issue with amplifier as I would have similar noises from old amplifiers if transistors were starting to fail. The weird part is that it goes away as soon as I turn off and back on the car.

Has anyone tested to see if the 'tone' of the static changes with changes in throttle? Looking back at older ignition systems (anyone here remember points and condenser?) radio static was a common occurrence before the advent of a suppressor. Modern day ignitions do not use points so there's not really a problem with arcing across points. However, there are other areas that could produce radio interference and my best guess would be to try checking all electrical connections in the ignition system...e.g., plug wires at both ends, to be sure they are fully seated. 0.02

Randomly comes on, no pattern whatsoever
Took to dealership and they have run diagnostics. Did not get any error. Keep monitoring for now

Same issue of loud static with my 23 4Runner Limited. Happens at random times when I turn the car on. I stop the car and restart to make it go away. It’s annoying. Posting to increase awareness of the problem.

Apart from the ground issue. You may want to also check antenna connections. When my wife had her older Dodge Grand Caravan I had a similar weird static or whining noise that happened on occasion but oddly it only seemed to come up when traveling closer to Champaign Illinois. I still wonder if another culprit for these random symptoms could be a very strong radio burst. The reason I mention this. East towards Champaign there is an array of Antenna. Could be related to some program the college does.
Now hear me out which makes me wonder if it could be a similar situation. I have flown RC planes as a hobby for nearly 30 years. In the past a powerful enough CB radio or HAM radio could potentially stomp all over your radio signal to your aircraft so flying near highways was usually not recommended. Now a days they use things like frequency hopping.

Could a strong radio burst of traffic cause a similar noise from your radio in your car traveling nearby?

Hi. I have a 2023 Limited. I have had this noise occur 3 times. The last time I happened to be at the Toyota dealer so I showed it to a service advisor. I have an appointment Friday. I wish they would have had a tech look at it then and there. At least he observed it. And of course it disappeared after cycling the ignition. I have a little experience with this in my past professional life. When they find nothing on Friday, I’m going to reset my radio to default settings. I’m guessing that’s the only validated config. My buddy reconfigured my Home Screen for me to Nav/Radio. Perhaps the initialization sequence is sensitive to the gps/satellite radio antenna loading. Who else with the problem has a custom Home Screen?

I see this thread is getting regular updates. Here’s mine.

Today it happened to me. We all know the sound. My 4Runner isn’t new though. I have a 2015 limited and the static just started today.

Some details I noticed. When the radio is making the static noise changing the audio source makes no difference and it is only coming from the front speakers (I believe both door and dash). All other speakers (back doors, rear hatch and sub) are dead. When the static stops and the music resumes all speakers are working normal again including the sub.

I got episodes of static over several hours. This including multiple vehicle restarts and one stop of about two hours. The only thing that stopped it was turning the radio all the way off or the volume down to zero. Turning the volume back up to 1 brings the static back.

After getting home and fiddling with different things on the car to test different conditions I went inside. I came back out after 20ish minutes and only got one small instance of static over another 30 min period.

It happened 2-3 times since I bought it brand new. Every time, turning the engine off and back on fixed it.

Definitely seems like it has to do with the JBL that's on limited and pro trucks

I’ve had it happen 2x now on my new 2024 pro . First time was about a week after purchase then again about 6 weeks later (I’ve only had it 2 mths). As it is I’m waiting for new shocks to come in due to the constant loud creaking sounds coming from the front . Think I got a

24 PRO here, 3 months old, less than 3500 miles. Just happened to me after dinner this evening. The static sound over powered the sound level of serious/xm. Changing the channel or lowering volume didn’t affect the static. Kinda pissed i didn’t think of recording the sound.

Anyone have luck with a solution at the dealership? My dealer advised to schedule a “tech appointment” and to leave it for a few hours. Haven’t had a chance yet.

Adding to the thread. Happened to me yesterday after dinner out. Parked, ate, came back in the truck and started it up and very loud static like everyone else has discribed. I thought for a min it was the solar storm stuff thats going on. But i guess this a known issue.
anyway, for the record I have a 2023 TRD PRO, 18k miles

Have a 2022 limited purchased new and this static issue just happened for the first time. I don't think it is heat related as we live in FL and the truck is out in the blazing sun pretty often. After this occured, I turned the audio off. After about 15 minutes of driving, we stopped somewhere but I didn't turn the engine off. I turned the audio back on and it was fine. I may mention the issue at my next service appointment just to have it documented, but I don't want to waste my time leaving it there as it seems like no one else has had luck with the dealer figuring this out. Be nice to know if anyone gets a solution.

Just posting for awareness. Have this problem and other sounds like beeps and thumps spontaneously coming out of my system. Sometimes but not always using Bluetooth, very loud volume cannot adjust. Stealership says never heard of before and need to replicate, that’s BS. I’ve got a 22 SR5 with 30 something K miles there is a manufacturing parts or installation issue the last few years, likely with the updated media head units, that seems to be a common trend. Haven’t figured out yet since Toyota failed twice, will take it to professional auto audio installer soon very disappointing my first Toyota and what an expensive problem with such a new car.

The static issue just happened to me this week on my 2024 TRD Pro. Restarting the car resolved it, but that was annoying.

Has anyone found a root cause or a fix?

I had a 2020 ORP for 5 years before this and never happened on that.

Just happened to me again this morning too. That’s about 4-5 times in 5000 miles. Never happened in my previous 4runner. Super annoying.
