I have a 1988 4runner with the v6. I had an idle surge on hot starts that would go away after a hard acceleration. After removing and cleaning the intake the idle surge now occurs anytime when the engine is warm. The odd part is after a long drive on the freeway it idles fine for a couple minutes. Ive played with the idle adjustment, idle air bypass, TPS, and listened for vacuum leaks. I'm at a loss for what could be my issue, EGR? O2 sensor? Magic? :goingcrazy: Any help would be appreciated!

Many years ago my 1988 (22R-E) had similar symptoms. If it's the same type airflow meter, squirting WD40 at the pivot points made it go away. Mine was just binding a little, apparently. It was an easy 'fix' that lasted for months at a time, so I never pursued it further.

sounds like you have a fuel injector leaking. probably #3 or #6 closest to the manifold crossover pipe at the back of the engine. these engines tend to hot soak when turned off on hot days as the extreme heat from the exhaust manifold and crossover pipe soaks back to the engine causing the injectors to leak. this is common in hot climates with both the 3.0 and 3.4.

the leaking injector will need to be found and replaced. getting them cleaned will not fix them
