2 door 4 runner ! Second gen 370th of the line, rare n rusty as shit.
Rust. Big meat tires and rust. Cool colour combo!
Hello 4 runner community ! I had recently picked up an older 4Runner, it’s a second gen 1990, but a 2 door, w a sluggish 22re ! I’ve been daily driving it for a few months now and it’s starting to run very rich, I scoped around and decided to take a few things off and had noticed a reeeaaaal bad fuel smell coming from the intake manifold.

Engine has about 260 on it, I am beginning to refresh it for health benefits by purchasing a master rebuild kit for it. Someone has mentioned to me that the injector seals might be shot. Or the cold start injector. Unsure of it but I’d be grateful if you could help me out.! Thank you !

Get yourself a set of FSM's as it seems you're looking to keep this rig. Check the fuel rails fuel pressure with a pressure gauge. You may have to drill and tap the fuel rail to add a Schrader valve so that you can get at the pressure in the fuel-rail. Doing this is very useful for diagnosing problems. There are two additional things that can cause over fueling or a smell like you're experiencing. Beside leaking injectors, the fuel pressure is regulated by a diaphragm actuated valve that reduces fuel rail over pressurization as engine speed declines. It is vacuum operated and sometimes the steel lines can get rusted internally and get plugged up. The other thing is a pressure modulator on the fuel rail that can rupture and on the 3.0L this is at the back of the engine compartment near the fire wall and the vapors will zoom into the vents below the windshield. Sorry I am not familiar with the 22RE and on where this similar device is located. But it is very likely Toyota used the same part on both motor versions and they are common in doing the rupture failure given enough time on the engine which is quite a long time but likely inevitable.
