Recently picked up a few Oem toyota filters as the price is great compared to other options.
And then see that theyre made in thailand and watch a youtube review that basically shows they flow oil just wonderfully, basically because they barely filter. All the sudden i dont get the warm fuzzy feeling about these filters, i highly doubt theyve always been made in Thialand.

Is this the go to filter people are running?

Most of the stuff we use daily is made there. End thread because it's going to start an oil fight...just watch.

My continued used oil analysis results show that the OEM filter is adequate.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
Wix or Purolator….on almost all my stuff….but I will run OEM until the warranty is up just to eliminate any dealer issues.

I bust out this anecdote a lot but dad’s RAV4 is still running fine and probably verging on 200k miles after almost 25 years on orange cans and whatever’s on the shelf so I won’t be too picky personally as long as they’re not counterfeit and you change the oil.

OEM is probably the best deal in-person though at around $6 so makes it hard to pass on even including uneven parts counter service. I’ll consider the others though. O’Reilley’s Wix cost more than RockAuto’s Wix XP option.

What I would avoid though is auto parts (or health/food products while we’re at it) from Amazon.

Being manufactured in China isn’t inherently the problem in terms of quality, it’s how closely QA and standards are adhered to. (which is also a China problem but I’m saying that it can vary widely depending on who’s commissioning the manufacturing)

OEM. Function + reasonable price = value.

Don't overthink it. This is the same as the oil debate. Are there differences between filters? Sure. Are there significant differences, such that they adversely affect engine performance or longevity? Not as long as whatever you use meets Toyota's specs.

OEM or Wix. If you have a lot of money you could get a Amsoil filter

Oil filter and crush washer are the only two things I buy from the Stealership.

    Thanks for all the input.

Oem for the win, surprised to see such an overwelming vote for Oem.

T4R owners are either all cheapskates or are on to something by not over thinking and overpaying in this department.

Makes me feel better about the 4 oem filters sitting in the closest at least.
    Thanks again.

We've seen too many "Car Care Nut" videos and know OEM is the way to go for engine related stuff.

OEM or WIX. Make no mistake Toyota doesn't make oil filters, they contract it out. The fact is WIX makes most of the OEM filters, a few are made by Purolator.

Was curious as to what other options you are on the fence about? Could you post some of those brands that are in the running against the OEM ?

Does Wix make the oem toyota filter? If so why is the toyota filter longer and have different style and count of oil drain back holes.. seems out of spec if toyota gave them any spec.. not to mention made in a different country.

I have a mobil 1 filter sitting here as well, nearly 4x the price, about twice the weight... and usa made. Everything in my experience would tell me its better.

BUT, ive read Toyotas are really easy on oil, as far as wearing it out and contaiminating it(under normal circumstances) so if thats the case, it stands to reason a lesser oil filter is just fine, and that seems to be the case as no one is having any issues with them.
How long have the oem been made in Thialand, that could be a good question.. anyone have an old one kicking around..

I'm using the Supertech ones from Walmart. :notsure:

Otherwise, Wix, OEM, Purolater, whatever. Change the oil at the appropriate interval, and don't overthink it.

Flow is more important than filtration efficiency. More pressure drop in a "better" filter causes the bypass valve to open more often on cold starts and at high rpms, which then lets unfiltered oil through.

Toyota OEM filters have been made in Thailand for at least the past 20 years or so (i.e. half of the 4Runner model's existence). Thailand is the world's second largest market for pickup trucks.

At the end of the day it’s the owners call…..when it’s your bag you can choose what to put in it, only you can decide what is right for your 4Runner.

I go with what I feel is right and that is all you can do these days.

Oil fight is the American way, right? :oldglory:

Interestingly the OEM Denso filters are made in Thailand, while the aftermarket Denso filter production moved to China a few years ago.
