2022 SR5 Premium. Whenever I turn on my AC, it always goes in to the recirculation mode. I normally do not wish to use it in recirc, so I always have to press the recirc button to switch recirc off.

is this normal? When I had my 2006 Tundra, it never went in to recirc mode unless I first selected recirc manually by engaging it myself.

It’s a bit of an annoyance to have to keep turning off recirc when I don’t want it on in the first place. Does my vehicle have a problem, or is this normal operation?

I believe it is normal, especially if the temp dial is set to max

Max A/C will default to recirculate, so I usually turn the dial lightly and stop at the first detent since there’s a slight one.

It could certainly be some programming too, on a couple road trips it felt like I had to fight my Kia’s insistence on using fresh air.

OK, I forgot to mention that my temp dial is NOT set to Max when this occurs. Thanks.

Press and hold the recirculation button for 5 to 10 seconds. It will not revert on its own after this.
Make sure the temp is 1 notch above minimum.

Does this work to always use recirc?

I hate “fresh” air with diesel fumes, pollen, exhaust, etc.

I actually prefer fresh air. So I did this and now it does not revert to recirculation on its own after a few minutes like it did earlier.
I can always press the button to shut the vent. But the temp cannot be at minimum for anybody this to work.

^Bruh, this is literally my daily commute. I bought a 4Runner just for this, 99.9% highway miles:

I know that was a trick in the 2nd gen Tacoma to keep it from opening on its own but doesn’t seem to do anything in my 19 Runner.

Maybe they changed the modules on the newer ones. Works on my 2011.

Thanks for trying to help Lc200 and to everyone. This recommendation did not work for me.

But Looky what I found! If all else fails, I guess read the owner’s manual! Duh-oh! On page 356, there is a section titled: “When the outside temperature exceeds 75 degrees F and the air conditioning system is on”

In the bullet points, it says the air conditioning system may switch to recirculating automatically! Even without the temp set to Max air.

As I mentioned in my initial post here, I can then press the recirc button and turn the recirc off if I desire. But evidently it’s always going to go in to recirc at first if the outside temp is over 75 degrees.

It’s been hotter than hell here in central TX for weeks on end now, so I guess my AC is going to go in to recirc at each start up.

I’ll have to wait until outside temps drop below 75 degrees to test the system. Again, thanks for the replies.

I’m glad to learn that, apparently my system is operating as designed in this heat.

Well makes sense because cooling hot air is counter productive.

It won't necessarily switch to recirc immediately, but it will do so before long.

Then you know those filters still let diesel stink in. I hate those stinky engines.
