I don’t know about that. When the front suspension was falling apart on the Rivians it was well broadcast. Same with the power tonneau cover. I haven’t heard of any big issues since.

I'm just referring to the numbers. If you only make 2.5% of the vehicles the other guy is making, your recalls will be tiny in comparison.

Yal keeping the ev short term? Or embracing that major cost down the road to replace the battery?

I’m more concerned with the numbers of recalls per vehicle than the number of vehicles recalled.

I’ll eat the battery cost. Teslas lasting ten years at 80+ percent. Calculate out the cost of the 4R if you took it to a mechanic for everything it needs plus your time. Granted EV suvs are a luxury item but I’m buying my time back to enjoy with my wife and family instead of vehicle care. Easy trade for me.

I certainly hope the techies at Rivian don't get their shorts in a knot needlessly and bail on a job that will most likely have a good future with Rivian. I have a Reservation for the R2 even though my wife already has a 2018 Tesla Model 3 and my 4Runner is only 2 months old.

The Rivian we bought has an 8 year/150K mile powertrain warranty (which includes the battery and motors). Realistically the battery should easily last 200k-300K miles. For us that is 15-20 years of driving 10-12K miles/year. 150K miles driving a 4 runner at 19mpg and $3.50/gallon is $27,631 in gasoline alone. 300K miles is $55,263 in gas.

I'll take the risk of having to replace the battery in 10-20 years versus the certainty of spending that much on gas. Battery costs in 10-20 years will likely be much lower than they are now. They've come down significantly in the last year or two as volume production of EV's ramps up.

I really like the R3. It seems like a perfect commuter and around town ride.

    Same! This thing looks fantastic!

I really like the R2 SUV as well. If charging availability improves, it may be my ideal vehicle in a few years.

Does anyone know if they can use the Tesla charging network yet?

If I'm spending that money though i'm going to get a LC250 or a GX

    Headline i saw today:

Rivian Is Still Losing More Than $32,000 On Every EV Sold

Kind of crazy but it's a crazy world.

I guess the prices won’t be coming down soon.
How are they going to be able to sell the R2 and R3 for reasonable prices?

Guys, companies do this all the time. The cost to develop is part of the long-run financial strategy. Tesla took years, as did Amazon to turn a profit. That's why larger companies subsidize their R&D through risk ventures like Tesla and Rivian. Not really a super concern; very normative business pattern.

For every Amazon you realize there are thousands that don't make it.

Fully aware. Guess I just don't get all the doubt and fear people have about a company that is backed by the largest car manufacturer (by value) in the world. For that level of anxiety I recommend a Xanax or just dose of reality. Otherwise have a great day :)

Got a deposit on the R2 for my wife as well. We plan on trading in her ‘15 Lexus NX300h. In 2026 our vehicle lineup should be: 2004 v8 4Runner, Rivian R2, 1990 Fox Body Mustang, street legal golf cart. I also have a 2014 Tacoma but I’ll probably sell that soon as the 4Runner does everything I need better than the Tacoma and is 1,000x more family friendly.

my wife works in outside sales so she’s driving around town all day, despises the utter lack of power in the Lexus, and hates getting gas. I’m not for or against EVs but they make perfect sense for her. We can charge at home overnight.
