I’m rebuilding the front axle on a 1985 Toyota 4 Runner and the races I pulled out of the steering knuckle were flush with the axle. The new races stick up about an 1/8” or so. Is that going to affect how the cap sits on the ball of the axle or will the shims just take up the space and it should be okay like that? I’m sure I’ll have to set the bearing preload to 15 lbs. to account for the larger tires. It just seemed odd the new races stick up a bit.

Were you able to compare the width of the old races vs the new ones?

Yeah everything else matched perfect, the more videos I watch of these rebuilds everyone else that has put these together has that 1/8” lip on their races. I’m starting to think whoever replaced these last might have used races a little smaller than what’s supposed to be on there? Not sure, I’m learning as I go with this 85 restoration.
