I can't figure out how to change my oil change indicator mileage from 5000 to 10000. I drive a 2021 4runner, and someone told me it can only be changed in the 24/25 models. That has to be BS, right? Any guidance? While it's a first world problem, it's a little annoying to get that Oil Maintenance Required unnecessarily for 5000 miles. Thanks

Weird, my 2021 triggers every 10k and awkwardly enough it’s independent of the oil interval I set in the head unit

Why is it an issue and why not change every 5k? oil = blood and its dirt cheap maintenance. Just curious, not being a troll

Some use cases do mean the Toyota 10k recommendation works fine and not just on the 4Runner.

Of course we’d get into oil analysis and what “severe” service is to really see who/what qualifies but Toyota’s haven’t really been blowing up like Hyundai/Kia’s trying to go for 7,500.

We’re teetering on the edge of a knife here as with any OCI thread, but 10k isn’t going to be a death sentence.

How do you reset it, once the oil is changed?

    1. Put your key in the ignition and turn it to the first position- don’t crank the engine just yet. If you have a push-button model, press the button twice.
    2. Push and hold the trip meter reset button on the dashboard, then turn your key to the second position.
    3. Continue to hold the odometer button for 10 seconds total. This should cause the Toyota 4Runner maintenance light to flash, possibly beep, then turn off.
    4. After it’s off, release the odometer button then start the car. If you see the light still on, repeat the process once or twice more to turn it off.
    5. If you have a multi-color display, all you have to do is select the cog icon on the display, select Scheduled Maintenance, then confirm your selection.

^It rubs the oil on its horse, or else it gets the 5th gen.

    A work in progress.....
Reminds me of the day back when I worked at Jeep dealer and Chuck F. the famous football player bought a new Jeep Wagoneer from us. He didn't change the oil ever and Jeep had a little over 10k on it when it was towed in for not starting. Engine was locked up tight and had no oil in it, [still having oem oil filter on it]. I think he had same logic....it didn't need to be changed yet. His warranty was denied.
OIL is far cheaper than parts. However if you have lots of money and are WAY COOL, maybe you can save $50 and chance ruining a motor. :nuclear: :yay:

It’s a maintenance reminder not a “oil change” reminder.

It’s up to you to determine what your maintenance is per Toyotas instructions.

Toyota will tell you the minimum that should be done every 5000 miles or six months that you should check is
    1.check floor mats
    2.inspect and adjust fluids
    3.inspect wiper blades
    4.rotate tires
    5.inspect brakes.

There are other items that you should do if you meet their “special” operating conditions.

They are also their minimums not don’t do it if it’s not listed items.

In this specific case of the '21 4Runner owned by OP (and mine, also a '21) it isn't a generic notification and specifically says "Oil Maintenance Required/Required Soon".

Also can confirm it is the same on a 2022 in regards to stating Oil Maintenance Required.

Interesting story, but it's not evidence for any sort of oil change interval.

A brand new vehicle losing all of it's oil and seizing has little to do with the oil change interval.

Why didn't it have a low oil, or low oil pressure warning? Does the manual tell you to check the dipstick every time you get gas or something?

If your story is true, that should 100% be on the manufacturer. Did they even put the right amount of oil in to start with?

To add: if a vehicle is dumping that much oil, you shouldn't ever need to change it, since it's going through it so quickly.

Not to mention 25k miles is clearly the limit!

Does it help the truck? No

Does it make Toyota's lawyers (and possibly the NHTSA or whatever) happy, after the runaway Tacoma recall? Hell yes

Well if I was in charge I would say it’s required to. Why? Because there are to many freeloaders that try to make a living by lawsuit.

Do you remember the recall? It was actually a pretty big deal, and it was caused by the floor mats sliding up and pinning the gas pedal. It's why the Tacomas (and I assume 4Runners now) are designed to kill the ignition if they sense you pressing the brake and throttle at the same time for too long.

It's also why Toyota started doing two free years of maintenance, had to make some concessions to get customers back after the recalls. (There was also a bad Prius recall at the same time, where you would push the brakes and nothing would happen).

Our 2020, same alert comes up. I thought we had our alert changed, via owners manual, settings feature on the dash, maintenance.... something something. Because, I don't believe in 10K oil changes on any vehicle that holds a small amount (in my opinion) of oil. The dump truck I drive gets 10K oil change, and that's dependent on weather, use and so on, there is a touch over 9 gals. in it. 5K is enough time and running to change our 4Runner oil.
