Depends on where you live. Some states allow enrollment by default. It isn't difficult to dial Toyota customer support and opt out. Or use SOS button and ask them to turn it off.

That diagram at the beginning of this thread doesn't show the location of the fuse (unless I missed something).

On my 2024, the DCM fuse is (was) in the fuse panel under the driver's side of the dashboard. 7.5 amp.

    You see this?

TX sues GM for collecting and selling customer data...

Toyota does tell folks they are tracking them, and has an option to opt out...
so not sure if this will apply to toyota

    what do you think?

I would hope this leads to more meaningful consumer protections, I suspect it’ll be just a cost-of-doing-business fine.

I’d like to see it target everyone who had their hand in the cookie jar too, not just GM.

Abbutt, patrick and paxton can't keep the electricity on in TX. Now it's reported that they undercounted the heat deaths from the last hurricane.

But they have plenty of time, and taxpayer money, to pursue this tin-foil hat stupidity...

    Sheesh!!!

What do heat deaths from hurricanes have to do with vehicles, more specifically toyota 4runners, have to do with TX trying to stop car makers from spying on/selling customer data?

The only thing that gets their attention is private class action lawsuits with billions of dollars in settlements. Government "oversight" and "regulation" and even lawsuits by government entities rarely have teeth. Criminal penalties and personal penalties for the wrongdoers are almost never applied, which is why companies simply ignore them. They know they can get away with the theft, which is why they do it.

Financially, that may be true, but they do in fact cause companies to change the way they do business, which also is a win.

    False logic.

    1) It is possible for most people/entities to do more than one thing at a time.
    2) You juxtapose two non-equivalent concepts to try to make up a distracting absurdity where there is none.
    3) You cite only one small use of the data as a shiny object to distract when there are many more equally bad uses and none good.
    4) Theft is theft.
    5) Fraud is fraud.

Take it up with Oregon, with all their problems with lack of shelter for thousands of their "unhoused" citizens who frequently die on their streets, crimes in their big cities, lack of funding for life line health care, yet their AG wasted all that time sued google over location tracking?

    https://www.opb.org/article/2022/11...-in-us-history-over-google-location-tracking/

    or is that "D"ifferent?

Privacy for the consumers should not be a partisan issue. It's a shame some people have such partisan lens to the world that even when politicians on the opposite team do something right, they will reflexively be against the effort out of sheer laziness so they don't have to think for themselves.

An independent mind would be able to parse each piece of news with objectivity and not "Team A vs Team B" binary trigger.

I remember a time when folks on the left side of the isle screamed about unchecked surveillance on the citizenry during the post 9/11 years. My, have times changed.

    1) Fraud, and
    2) Theft of what many people believe to be their own, namely their data.

And this isn't a Texas forum or a Texas thread. Failed logic again. You can't stand truth and facts and so far have not demonstrated the ability to reason with facts. Please feel free to leave the thread that I started. Others find it valuable even if you do not.

Privacy is a partisan issue if it’s an issue taken up by political parties. Because the flipside of privacy protections is new regulation of businesses. In my state there was a solid decade where anything remotely looking to limit any aspect of business was viewed as “burdensome regulation” that will kill the economy. Politically, anything that could be construed as regulating business, would be dead in the water.

A lot of money gets made from “analytics”. In fact, turning off the fountain of private data will affect the bottom line of a great deal of companies.

If the political powers-that-be in Texas want, a few well placed ads discrediting the AG as a “politician just looking to score cheap points” (he probably is precisely that), narrated by a “grandmother” who “lost her job, benefits, and retirement” because of a law that put her data-analytics company out of business…and this AG and his master will probably back off.

So yeah, if it was uttered by a politician or someone serving at the pleasure of a politician, it going to be partisan. Maybe there was a time where some things weren’t partisan, but that’s because it was probably an issue neither party cared about.

edit: don’t get me wrong… I think the practice of personal data collection, the sneaky ways it’s obtained, and how it’s used, has completely gotten out of hand, and it absolutely should be regulated. But we have to remember that big businesses are viewed by many as our society’s sponsors. Politicians will be careful to not to bite the hand that feeds them. At best, laws will be passed that have a lot of strong language (enough to give someone a political boost), while having no actual teeth so as not to anger Daddy Warbucks.
