People who live in a major city: what mpg are you getting?

I do the vast majority of my driving in the city, much of it in stop and go traffic.

I’m curious to hear what mpg (or L/100km) 5th gen owners are getting in city driving only.

    So I have 3 questions:
    1. What mpg do you get in the city?
    2. What city?
    3. What mods are you running?

    2. LA

My wife and i have almost identical vehicles, and our mileages vary pretty drastically. Driving style is a MAJOR part of it more so than mods. Both have 32" wider than stock General ATX all terrain tires.

Mine - average about 18-19 with "poor" tanks showing 15-16
Very light on the throttle, take a mile to get up to speed, think of the egg under your foot between your foot and the accelerator pedal. I actually go a bit further with this, i drive as if i have an open container of water in the back. Dont spill the water, dont take corners fast, dont brake hard. I let off the throttle WAY before a stop and roll as far as possible before getting on the brakes. I can get about 150,000 miles out of brake pads.

Wife - averages about 16 with "poor" tanks showing 13-14
Very heavy on the throttle, basically get to speed as quick as possible. Is on the throttle up until the point she has to switch to 80% brake pedal pressure to stop. She gets about 40,000 miles before the rotors are warped and we usually have to do rotors and pads at 50,000 miles.

Is this specifically city driving? In a major city with stop and go traffic?

I’m in the Dallas suburbs so it might not be as stop/go as you want but I’m looking at probably 17 MPG average not counting longer trips. (my true current, calculated average is 18.1)

It’s propped up by some cruising at 40-50 during low-traffic, more green lights times. But high traffic times can get stop/go-y but not like LA.

But I drive in a relatively relaxed manner.

I’d expect 15-16 MPG in a tank overall for “city” but short trips are less and can add up.

    No mods.

Edit: No coasting at all or exceeding 35 MPH in stop/go traffic would probably keep me in the 13-15 MPG range.

yeah primarily city, we have a 6 mile trip on the highway to hit the exit to get home but its mostly stop and go in town, lots of time spent at drive thru as well. Thats where i see mine get the biggest hit. If you go to drive thru like McDs that gets you in and out in 3-4 minutes its WAY better than going to What-A-Burger where you are going to be in line 11-14 mins.
As i think about it at times i add up the time spent in a drive thru and some tanks, its like an hour or more worth of time spent at drive thru and redlights. So you get about 5-6 hours of combined time to a tank and the more of that time you spend sitting at a redlight or drive thru, the less time you will be able to spend driving and clocking miles.

This may make me sound like an a**h*l* but… I don't care. I mean, I really don't care. Here's why...

I spent the past 13 years, driving a Land Cruiser (just gave that to my daughter) and now drive a 4Runner. These trucks share a few traits. They both get very bad gas mileage. However, they probably compete with each other as the most reliable vehicles ever made. The second trait likely offsets the first. Third trait – the Land Cruiser and the 4Runner top the chart in retained value. So I look at total cost of ownership, and that makes the difference in 15 or 19 mpg pretty negligible. Oh, and then there's that subjective trait… you know, the one that makes you look over your shoulder every single time you park and walk away from your 4Runner. That one's hard to quantify, but we all know it's worth a bunch.

As echoed by others, it's all about driving style. I live in San Diego, short daily commute, and heavy foot, and I get around 12-13 MPGs. This was before I redid my suspension and put on my "skinnies" this summer. I just returned from a 4,000-mile trip up to Idaho, around Idaho and back. So a little bit of everything (minus city) and I GPS tracked the mileage the entire time and we got 12.76 MPG. The only time I sped was driving up to and back from Idaho. The rest of the time, I tried to drive without using the brake pedal. I was able to get 14-15 on some tanks all loaded up.

The picture above is during a day trip, we also had 2 e-bikes on the carrier for most of the 4,000 miles.

I live in St. Louis, MO area. First year I bought my 21' I was getting about 19MPG combination City and highway. Completely stock 4R/ORP/MR. That was also the last year of my working. Retired now since 01/22. No back and forth to work. Will probably log only about 7K per year now. So I haven't paid any attention to my gas mileage. I need to check it out. LOL
