I originally was looking at awnings but I stumbled across this Kelty shelter for a good deal awhile back. I freaking love this thing so far. Packs down small, goes up easy enough and has served me well through a few storms. I can’t really think of any cons to it aside from it getting a little warm in there if you have the door closed and the sides tucked in. For those of you that have awnings, do you see any benefits over something like this?

That type of shelter appeals to me, but I don't see it as directly equivalent to awnings. I like that it provides stand-up room for changing clothes in public camping situations and wind/rain protection for gear that you might unload for sleeping. The first part of that is a key difference to me.

I'm still thinking about what my next car camping setup will be.

I looked at those a while back, pretty cool but once i started my cross country trip i realized it wouldn't work for my type of Overlanding (No bear protection). Realized that if i was going to put something like that on my 4Runner i would just set up a separate tent/shelter.

A perfect size tarp with the liftgate open FTW.
