Which rear springs and why?

    I’m looking for some input. I have a 5th gen 4Runner, family hauler, road trip, camping, overland type build. It gets used and abused pretty hard but it’s not definitely not a rock crawler.

    Current suspension is extended travel remote res Kings with custom length rears, Ikon 2” rear springs, OME trim pack spacer for the rear to correct the lean, durabumps, JBA control arms. About a 2” lift all the way around maintaining rake when not loaded.

    I have a steel rear bumper on order.

    The bumper alone is 225 lbs, and the full size 33” spare will go from under the truck to out back, no extra weight there but it’s leveraged further out. it has RCI sliders and Their aluminum plate armor so I’d gray see probably guess 50-75 pounds to the rear axle. I also have a small Dometic fridge. So I figure with the new rear bumper I figure 300-350 pounds static year round weight added. When it’s not ski season I have a 160-170 pounds distributed across a full length roof rack for the rear of the year from an iKamper Skycamp that’s bed lined.

    What rear springs would you go with for my application and why?

    So the total added weight is approx 350lb loaded, and 170lb in the summer...
    -Are you asking for advice because its not riding well or sagging too much?
    -Are the shocks just standard shocks from King, or have they been tuned?

    RSG sliders, Yakima offgrid basket, Pro-Comp wheels, SOS Streamline bumper and skids, Warn VR EVO10S winch + Ultimate Sidewinder, Bilstein 6112 + 5100 + rear lift coils, Rigid Dually SS ditch lights w/Caliraised brackets and OEM style dash switch
    If you're OK with losing a little rake, the 1.5" heavy load Bilsteins I'm running might be a good fit. I am always loaded with at least about 200#, plus I have a roof rack.

    I can't necessarily say how the ride quality would be with Kings, but I'm happy with them and 5100's.

    I'm running 2.3" of lift out front, and still maintain a slight rake.

    The springs are rated for something like 400# constant load.

    You have it backwards. It’ll be about 350ish lbs minimum all the time. 350 during the winter months and about 500 lbs total the rest of the year.

    I’m asking because I have the bumper on order. I don’t have all of that weight yet but I will and my current Icon 2” springs are not going to work well once I start hanging another 250 pounds at the back of the vehicle. I’m trying to be pro active not reactive. The shocks are custom valved, when I rebuild I will revalve for the new setup.

    it sounds like the 3” Icon are a little bit on the heavy side for what I’ll need, and personally I’d prefer not go with anything Icon if I can help it.

    once you get your bumper load your 4runner up and go weigh it at a cat scale. Alot of truck stops have them.

    Got it, you may be fine with current springs, hard to say without having all the new weight added first.

    To add, any reason you can't run in coil airbags like the riderite in addition to current spring to help it out if you put extra loads on trips, and keep it as is until then?

    I'm not talking about bellows style airbags, i'm talking about in-coil, such as these. I run them on my stock coils, but am curious if I do a 1" eibach later would that be a problem.

    You solution would work but my issue isn’t loading up for trips, there will be a significant permanent increase of weight. There’s no real advantage to band aid a permanent weight increase when springs are relatively cheap and easy to change. It’s just a matter of which I want to go with. I already have a decent amount of added weight on springs that are designed for a near stock load. There’s no logically reason to keep these springs once the bumper shows up and I have a total of 350-500 lbs all the time weight added, especially when there are a couple options for springs designed for applications pretty close to that.

    Totally understandable Agent.

    In fact, adding the airbags would require removal of the spring, so might as well swap em out :)

    Meanwhile, do you have a model number for those current springs you have? I could be interested in picking them up off you (I run significantly less weight and decided again a full plate rear bumper after my last 4runner).

    What Eibach spring is it that you’re running that is a 1.5” spring? I know of their 1” spring,

    They're Bilstein B12's.
