dont know if anyone noticed in the video i posted, ryan_gregg stated that boost came on sooner than normal and stayed on longer prior to failure. also his mpg tanked pretty hard from his norm's before the failure.

How does the fact that the guy turning the wrench is American and not Japanese change the quality of the plastic dash panel?

At least part of that is because the drivetrain was already an old design when it was launched. 5 speed autos (not sure if the exact same tranny) had already been in use for years in the 4th gen 4R and the 2nd gen Taco going back to 2004. the 1GR engine had been used in a half dozen different Toyota models going back to 2002. The only major change from the same engine in the gen4 / gen2 Taco was the addition of a second VVTi cam.

I drove a gen2 Taco for almost decade before getting mine.. I figure by the time Ive done I will have driven the same engine for 20+ years ;) ;)

I can't answer that, but there is a difference. I mentioned it to my service writer and he told me a lot of people comment on the differences. Unfortunately the work ethic in North America isn't the same as in Japan.

I have a 2014 Tacoma made in Mexico and a 2017 4Runner made in Japan. I haven’t noticed any build quality differences. Both have been ridiculously reliable vehicles with no issues other than the basic wear items. I’m not sure we’ll be able to say the same thing about the next generation.

from what i remember, workers in japan have a vested interest in the company and bonus/pay is related to how well they keep factory defect rate down (how many factory vehicles they have to fix after they leave the factory)

its something i read ages ago so i dont know if that is still the mantra currently in japan

Yea the 1GR was a solid base back then except for the head gasket thing they solved in a year or so. Not sure how well they handled the recalls in those cases. The 4th gens sales fall off at the end of its run, probably had Toyota 2nd guessing the 5th gen a little. Might be why they just redesigned the body on the 120 platform, gave the proven 1GR a vvti upgrade and saved money instead of a full blown redo like the 6th gen.

Cognitive bias. You're only saying I'm creating false choices because you don't like how politics actually works in this country.

I don't know if the original poster responded, but they are talking about a JL and JK. Those two model Jeep Wranglers are the last two iterations, current iteration and one just previous. So, new model Jeeps.

As someone that owed two "new" Jeeps, current models are better than "old" Jeeps. I've had those too.

I concur my 2015 Tacoma is made in Baja Mexico and has been stout and rattle free so far my current 2023 4Runner is doing well but my 2022 4Runner was full of rattles coming from behind the dash and headliner (sold that one)

I've had Canadian assembled Corolla, US assembled Taco and Tundra, and now 100% Japan built 4Runner, fit and finish is just different. 4Runner body panels have tighter tolerance, interior plastics do not vibrate/squeak.

I’d have to wonder if the perceived quality differences come down to a bunch of little things adding up based on the different component suppliers. Not sure to what granular detail toyota specifies the ingredients in (or manufacturing process) the plastics of door cards, dashes, the clips used to attach them, etc, but that stuff could easily stack up to noticeable differences in NVH levels. Apply that to anything else like rubber bushings on suspension, engine mounts etc.

As far as differences between workers in Japan and US/Mexico/Canada, there are a ton of cultural and language factors that can impact the performance of managers towards workers and vice versa that can lead to subtle differences in how an employee might respond to an assembly line issue they encounter, or how management responds it.

It’s really simplistic to think that it’s only “laziness” of workers that affects the final product. At least I’d be willing bet that Toyota doesn’t view it that simplistically. They can’t afford to simply put blame on others to make themselves feel superior. Toyota is as much a producer of manufacturing process, as it is an auto maker. That would have to include a process to minimize differences due to human variables. But I would imagine that is made more challenging across any language and cultural differences.

I wonder if the Japanese have an edge in that their people have more opportunities to learn a technical back ground than most countries.
Obviously their recent history would suggest that in the electronics fields.
Each culture has their strengths and Japan's production of combat vehicles and aircraft and the subsequent recovery from WWII cemented a work ethic for decades to come. Not very many countries have these events in their history. This fact alone imo, gives Japan an edge. I just hope globalism doesn't turn production into a one size fits all mindset one day.

Basically lots of gimmicks, poor build quality and strange design choices. It’s a long video but watch it when you get a chance. It’s worth seeing a mechanics review of the truck.

Jokes aside, in the video, AMD spends half the time complaining about the removable bluetooth speaker (which copies the Gladiator) and lack of rear legroom from the shock absorber seats.

You don't think he has a point when you have 4-door cab and nobody could use rear seats with a typical driver front seat position? Why have a 4-door cab with these?

Not a killer reason, but it improves access to back seat cargo relative to a folding front seat.

The issue is while yes the 4Runner is assembled in Japan, thousands of the parts inside of it are made from outside manufactures in china, India, Mexico etc and everyone started cutting corners since Covid

The 4th gen Pro is priced a lot higher over the OR compared to 3rd gen. It's a niche model. Toyota should've just deleted the second row in the Pro and make it a storage area like in the GR Corolla or Mustang Mach 1. Having a suspension seat is nice when you're spending 8-10 hours on the trail. I would've installed a set in my Tacoma if it behaved with the airbags and occupant classification sensors.

The choice of double cab for the TRD Pro probably came down to hybrid battery storage under the rear seats. That area in the hybrid model contains the traction battery, 12V lead acid battery, cooling system, electronics and a fusebox. Didn't make sense for Toyota to engineer it into the Xtra Cab given how few Pros they expect to build.

AMD is very experienced and knowledgeable as a mechanic, but the video needs to be kept in context. If you brought a built off-road rig to him, he'd probably tell you it was stupid to deviate from stock lol.
