What should I look for and how much frame rust is too much?

 

Surface rust is not a concern, but as rust starts inside the rail it might be difficult to determine the extent. Obviously, anything with a rust hole in it is gone too far.

Take a small thin screwdriver - if it goes through, walk away.

Do you have any requirements for your intended use or does none of that matter in your decision?

 

A lot depends on $$ you wish to spend. If you wish a Toyota extended warranty you can get a silver, gold or platinum warranty on a 5-6 year old 4runner through the Toyota Certified Used website. It will show all vehicles in their system through out the Country.
This year I found a 2019 SR5 for my daughter. She got 7 years 100,000 mile Gold warranty it is super clean with 50,000 miles on it.
