Had a friends ex wife buy a CarFax "Clean" vehicle. Turned out to be brought in from Nova Scotia, Sold in Indiana then here to Stealer in Pa. Tree crush roof, repair hap hazardly, couldn't find where noise was coming from. Not sound proofing in ceiling & HAD been an "Accident" vehicle i.e. tree falling, crushing roof. Car Fax is total Bull Garbage in = Garbage out!! A Fox as the Mascot should be the 1ST warning! But I never buy used either because I flat out don't trust people unless I know them. Just me. Hope you find the issue & correct the discrepancy too!

Does your TRD have TRD exhaust?

I have a 2022 thats not a TRD and it came with TRD pro exhaust. So you never know what it has or had. My point is my exhaust had horrible resonance to the point i took it off and went with a stocker. All good now.

TRD exhaust didn’t come on the TRD Pro until MY2020. So unless it was added afterwards, her TRD pro has the regular exhaust

The ventilation system is designed to always allow approximately 10+/-% outside air to come in when on recirc for CO safety reasons.

One thing I notice about my 4Runner ('23 ORP), is that it seems very air tight. Closing the door- softer than normal, but not overly soft- results in it not quite closing, due to air pressure. In other cars I've had, I've actually heard flaps opening and closing to release the air when closing a door.

Perhaps try to roll the window down before closing the door and see if that alleviates the issue.

The other comment here regarding the drone of the TRD exhaust may also be a possibility as it could be perceived as pressure to your ears.

Will be interesting to see if this gets resolved and what it ends up being.

Is there any possibility of the liftgate vents being clogged? It's hard to imagine the 4R being sealed so tight that pressure would build, but that couldn't happen if those vents were clear.

You have just the rear windows down slightly and or the gate window cracked. You can get this natural phenomenon to occur in any vehicle. With just the rears down, the faster you go, the faster the resonation of pressure as it tries to equalize the higher pressure coming in through the back windows, with the lower pressure just outside the vehicle (bernoulli effect). It's a push/pull effect and you'll definitely feel it in your ears. Once that occurs, lower one of the front windows to equalize the pressure. I know it sounds like bs, but it's just physics. Physics is Phun

Bernoulli Principal is the Venturi effect. Increase velocity decrease pressure i.e. the wing of an airplane This is what causes lift and why Lg planes have leading/trailing edge flaps to increase area on the top.

This is a weird one. The Pro exhaust theory could be right…the standing wave type resonance of the exhaust could be interpreted by the ears as “pressure”.

Either that, or some other resonant pressure wave for other reasons, like maybe the pressure release vents in the back are uniquely messed up in a way that creates pressure waves.

But there is no possible way that the actual cabin pressure is different than the outside. It’s hard enough to create pressurized hulls for airplanes, so it’s not going to accidentally happen on a car. If it were the case, when getting out of the vehicle after a trip, you either wouldn’t be able to open your doors or they would explosively open, depending on the direction of the pressure differential.

Another possibility is that the OP has an emerging issue in her vestibular system. I had a long bout with vestibular problems that among other issues, caused me to sometimes have sensations of pressure in the ears (often but not always my symptoms included balance issues and intermittent ear ringing).

I agree, it would be very difficult to increase cabin pressure without some sort of compression to do so. I didn't want to discount the theory in case it actually happened to someone and the cause was found. The human ear is quite sensitive. The Pro exhaust theory makes sense.

Ok, sorry. I missed that from the OP.....

During this thread, I kept thinking Helmholtz Resonance because of the way she seems to get building pressure at higher speed.

They're just isn't a possibility that this is pressure related. For two reasons. 1. Opening any of the windows would equalize the pressure. 2. There's no way to pressurize a 4Runner... well, practically speaking.

I am squarly in the "exhaust drone/resonance is being interpreted as pressure" camp.

The good news is the OP does not need to get a new car – just a few hundred dollars worth of exhaust work!
