Scangauge 2 to view transmission temp?

Anybody get a Scangauge 2 OBD reader to view transmission temps? I have a scangauge 2 but it needs the firmware update for 4.02+ to apparently doToyotas so I thought I would ask if anybody has used this reader successfully before I buy the new board upgrade and if its easy to enter the Toyota codes to view various different gauges and temps accurately? This was going to be used for a transmission drain and fill using it for correct transmission temp range when the its on volume and you hit the mini overflow drain to drain out residual. thanks

 

Can you not enter the x-gauge code for it to work? I know it worked on my 2010 Tacoma and others reported it working on the Runner.

 

yeah but my actual unit firmware is to old to enter the codes. How easy was it to access tranny temp with the x gauge code? also did it retain the code when you powered it off or did you have to re enter the x guage to get to the temp reading each time you plug into the the data port?

 

Once entered it is retained and populates with a value as soon as there is communication is available from the truck. Depending on the cost to upgrade, maybe consider the SG3 since adding gauges is easier with it and there's wireless updates.

 

I saw the 3 listed to. How good is it? Hard to tell how good the screen is? hows the resolution. Any idea how good the mount plug is?

I was considering purchasing it but I didn't want more stuff than I already have in the Runner. I was possibly going to mount it to the A pillar with a Proclip mount since it will be in line of sight. I don't know much about it though.

I ended up getting an OBD2 link and I run OBD2Fusion on my phone which also works through carplay so it's on my headunit when I want it. It's tricky to set up but it works pretty well.

 

I haven't done any firmware update on my Scanguage2 and the xguages worked without any trouble. Did a quick search and found this if you want to try. I can check what I'm using on mine if needed.

The SG3 is excellent in all ways. I have one in my 2020 Tundra.

 

I had a friend of mine 3D print a contoured mount that matches the curve of the top of the steering column, that gave a nice flat top to mount the scan gauge to. Out of the way and right in front o the gauge cluster, no blockage.

 

I have the Scanguage2 mounted on steering column with their supplied velcro. I normally have 4 tire pressure showing especially if driving fast. I requested the tranny temp X-guage installed by the Scanguage company at time of purchase. When climbing long grades I have the tranny temp, intake air temp, charging system and engine temp showing.

 

To answer Grug556 question about the scanguage plug: there is a serial type plug that mates with the OBD2 under your dash. The quality cable has a RJ data plug type end that snaps into the Scanguage in 2 positions to assist cable placement. These RJ plugs are somewhat delicate and are like the ones on routers. The cable is long enough for most dash installs . I recently purchased a second cable so If I want to use my Scanguage to read the OBD2 of another vehicle, I do not have de-install my under dash cable where I used a few cable ties

On the Scan 3, how is the resolution on the screen? Is it touch screen or buttons? Is it worth it over the 2?

 

The scanguage 2 screen is simple and the buttons cycle thru the many parameters available. I noticed if the screen gets too hot it goes blank. I use a sunshade in my windshield or I put a white towel over it when parkng in hot sun. Seems to eliminate the issue.
