In the process of investigating the source of a smell in my truck I had to remove most of the interior parts in the back. Anyone know what is tape-like stuff is called and where I might be able to get replacement? Mine is brittle and wet and in need of replacement.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Not sure exactly what they use but it's panel "deadener", adds mass and cuts down on noise. You can apply commercial mass damper material like Dynamat right on top, but of course any water trapped in there is bad news.

There's plenty of articles on sound deadening if you feel like going down a rabbit hole.

The bigger issue is where's the water coming from.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
That's sound deadening that the factory installs. As you can see, they install less than the bare minimum, which is why the interior cabin is so loud. You can buy it anywhere online, and for pretty cheap. Since you have the interior stripped, lay down as much as you can (or want).

They also put it down in areas to help prevent squeaks/rattles/vibration.

The guy in this thread had a similar issue that you did (a weird smell): https://www.4runners.com/threads/rear-seat-floor-carpet-damp.20477/

Thanks for the replies guys. I ordered some from Amazon and should be in tomorrow. Had I just waited a bit I would have not had to bug everyone with this question. As I was scraping it out my son walked by and said "oh, you are scraping out the sound deadener" . :)

As to the source of the water: https://www.4runners.com/threads/oh-the-stink.39914/#post-624229
