I got my 4R 6 months ago and toiled with this question. My friend has a killer Rubicon and my old roommate had a CJ for years and years. I think the best measurement is when I was in Gunnison last month. There are 4R's everywhere...of all years. The locals seem to have many more 4R's than Jeeps, and that town is an epicenter of fishing, hiking, skiing, and offroading. It gets to 90 in the summer and -30 in the winter.

The tourists that roll through my little cabin town all rent jeeps or OHV's for short day trips or haul them up on a trailer. I think both are very capable off road but the 4R really works well for a car to work in, live in, drive in, travel long distances as well as hitting the trails.

Before I bought my 4Runner, what I really wanted was a four-door Wrangler. At the time it was the JKU. I really wanted the Jeep, I thought at the time )and still think really), that they are "cooler" than the 4Runner, and a more fun vehicle. After posting my use case and needs on the Wrangler forum, the general consensus was that the 4Runner would be a much better vehicle for my uses. Everyone had good things to say about it, there wasn't any Toyota hate in that forum that I saw.

Everyone acknowledge that since this wasn't primarily going to be an off-road vehicle, and that I put high miles on by commuting 60 mi a day on the highway, the 4Runner would be a more comfortable and practical vehicle for that.

The true debate should be: Black Mesa "Joop" vs. the Counter-Strike Source Corolla.

    Joop all the way.

I sometimes miss my old '86 cherokee 2 door with 2.8 v6. It was 3 speed with OD and shifted into that OD gear at about 45 so she was loud at around 80 - also probably why I eventually blew the engine. No tachometer on it but at that speed the RPMs had to be up there.

But, it was light as a feather with good 4wd so it would float across mud where heavier vehicles would get bogged down and either stuck or couldn't make it up small hills (including the 100 series LC that I passed one day)

The Jeep Cherokees and Wranglers from 1990's to 2000's with the 4.0 Litre Inline 6 engines were very good....just not 4 runner good.
The build quality of the rest of the vehicle , body parts , interior was awful

I had a salvage title Cherokee sport. Thought the engine was awesome, couldn’t find another manual trans when I could no longer handle the wet inside when it rained, due to being a roll over vehicle. Bought my first Toyota pickup to replace that.

I say that don't be a fanboy. Toyota Fanboy will tell you that Jeep is a pile of crap. And Jeep Fanboy will tell you that 4Runner is a minivan and has no business off-road.

I wheel with Jeeps all the time, and the 4Runner does fime, with a mattress in the back lol. KDSS also helps

If you are into pickups there are deals on Gladiators. The Mojave one is pretty good on the road and offroad. Maybe time to replace your aging 4Runner?

Can't believe folks pass this and pay $67,000 for the funny 2024 Tacoma TRD Pro
I am confident this dealer will agree to give this thing for $57,000

You can find 10% off MSRP with additional factory rebates. Easy to get $8000 $10,000 off MSRP on Gladiators.

That's because masses are asses, and asses want the best selling pickup which is the Tacoma. But it is going to change soon, Tacoma just had the worst sales in its history.

Ranger is another good truck that is struggling against the Tacoma. Tacoma TRD Pro costs $10,000 more than the Ranger Raptor, and that is insane.
