My '18 ORP only has 35,900 miles and the steering wheel is starting to peel on the top edge and around towards the dash. Sux because the steering wheel on my Land Cruiser lasted almost 15 years before it fell apart.

Anybody have this issue on your 4R model this soon, and if so, was it covered under the bumper to bumper?

What do you attribute this to, sun exposure?

I had the same issue on my 2017 SR5. It had only 29k miles when it started happening. After a few calls to Toyota customer service (and pictures uploaded), they sent me to a local dealer who replaced the steering wheel for me.

Mine is a 2016, and the steering wheel still looks like new.

Heard back from the dealership today. They said it’s about $1000 job and while it’s technically considered wear and tear they’re going to do a one time courtesy replacement and only charge me $125.

    Thoughts???

$125 is a no brainer. Do it.

The comment from @LandCruiser above is spot on.

Using hand sanitizer and grabbing the steering wheel before your hands are 100% dry will destroy your steering wheel.

For this reason, I have a cheap steering wheel covers on my wife and daughters cars. Nobody protested after I showed the how much a new steering wheel costs

Just noticed this on my 2018 SR5 premium in the same spot the OP mentioned. Might be calling my local dealer here soon.

Yep noticed the same on my '19 TRD OR. Any alcohol will destroy these wheels. I noticed even my airbag cover, certain spots started to fade. In the sun my wheel looks blue from fading. Strangest thing with these wheels. My 09 Civic wheel is still pitch black...weird.

This^^ And buy a $20 steering-wheel cover on Amazon, which is what I did when they replaced mine.

I have a 2017 4 Runner with a peeling steering wheel, and suggestions(tips) to get it replaced by Toyota or a dealer.

^^^THIS IS EXACTLY RIGHT^^^ My buddy whos a Toyota tech have told me never to use hand sanitizer and grabbing the steering wheel afterwards. He mentioned that every single one he replaces, the customer has a ton of hand sanitizer, clorox wipes, lotion, everywhere in the car.

Forget the dealer and upgrade. Life is too short to stay stock. Steering wheel is very easy to replace with basic hand tools: https://www.ebay.com/itm/285721507371

Mine started at 30,000 miles as well. I peeled 90% so far so at least it doesn’t look like it’s peeling. I still have some more to go you can see from the peel line.

Exactly right. I picked mine up with 30,000 during covid and never used the sanitizer but expect the previous owner did as it started peeling shortly after I took ownership.

I re-wrapped mine when I added heat to the steering wheel. I removed the factory wrap. Note that this was not my original steering wheel but a secondary one I bought from FB Marketplace for this specific mod. My original is still in great shape as I have used a steering wheel cover over the years.

I do not use hand sanitizer or lotion or anything, but this seems to be a flaw in Toyota materials. I will look into other options, but really would like it replaced.

I had this problem with my 2012 Accord.
do the $125 replacement this time.
If it happens again I highly recommend the high quality leather wheel covers from wheelskins.com. The covers have been awesome. You sew it together so it fits really well, and doesn’t feel too bulky like the cheaper ones do.
