    Hi all, I’m new here, we have a 2012 with 60000 miles ,limited with the x-reas suspension that has started to leak and wondering what everyone is switching over to.
    Will a 2023 4 runner suspension work? Or is there a better route. We don’t 4x4 in it other than winter driving in BC Canada.

    Yes. If you're going to rip out the entire XREAS system, any suspension (shocks, struts, and springs) from any year will work. The nice thing is that because you don't require anything fancy, you might be able to find take offs for very cheap or even free. Look in this forum and in FB Marketplace or CL. Nice low mileage for a 2012.

    Any suspension that fit to 5th gen 4runner works.

    On my Limited I have tried Bilstien5100 and now running Ironman FCP which I got on a discounted time. They have sale on major holidays like memorial, July 4th, Thanksgiving, etc..

    It's no big deal, remove xreas and install new shocks.

    Thanks for the info, Yes there is a new set off a 2023 for $100, the wife hardly drives it.

    XREAS did a much better job eating potholes and cracks on pavement. Ironman FCP suspension is a little compromise in on road comfort but not too bad. On a positive side I love the lifted look Ironman FCP gave to the Limited and now I can have the confidence to have don't care driving style on gravel roads.

    With Bilstien5100s I didn't like the feeling how it handle potholes / bumps. For example driving over speed bumps without slowing down, with Bilstien5100 you get lot of impact inside the vehicle especially in the back, But with Ironman FCP the shock is absorbed and released relatively smoothly (I think the technical term is rebound?, not sure).

    On a minor note, I hate the green color springs on Ironman FCP. I'm someone who like factory look. Wish they were black.

    The green is what drew me to check the iron man setup. As a buddy told me, springs can be painted.

    XREAS is great if you’re a pavement princess.

    Off road it’s too fragile and will fail soon enough. The upside is you can get whatever you want after that!

    Based on your post, you should look at something cushy. I took it a different direction myself.

    Just a FYI, from my reading around here one user who seemed to know what they are talking about said you can replace just the shock. Allegedly there is a valve build in that closes when you disconnect the hose from the Xreas and it will not leak out any of the oil.

    Well, since you put it that way, sure i dont see why not. They have a special valve where the rubber line meets the hard line, as you unscrew the cap the valve seals itself off, when i pulled mine off i think i may have had one drop of oil come out of each fitting. When the system is built i suspect the hard lines and expansion chambers are installed, filled with oil, then pressurized, and the shock absorber comes from a totally different plant pre-assembled and pressurized and the shock is fitted on assembly and as the line is installed it opens the valve and the main hard lines and shock are married and the pressure normalizes between them all. So yes, when you pull the Xreas shock off the lines seal themselves up and yes you should theoretically be able to re-install them with no issues.

    yes its got a disconnect at each shock on the hardline to it. Only issue is sometimes corrosion is so bad you cant open the disconnect fitting. Mine were totally rusted out after a couple of years due to the salt here on the roads

    The X-Reas in my 2015 Limited needed replacement and I went with the 5100 Bilsteins set at 1.75 up front and with 1” Cornfed spacers on the rear. I had put 133K on it before making the change and I honestly don’t see any degrading on the ride. I like the one inch lift now and will put on some BFG 265/60/20 tires when my Michelin’s wear out as I do have it off road around 10-15% of the time. BTW—did NOT have the entire X-Reas system removed. The lines are pressure capped at the first knuckle on the system, so the lines were just removed from the shocks and just zipped tied back. Highly recommend this switch if and when the system fails or you just want a better off-road suspension.

    The stock spring on front passenger side of my 2014 Limited is different than the driver spring. Is yours the same? I'm trying to determine the best way to level out the front since driver side is 1/2 inch lower. I did also replace XREAS with 5100s all around. Wondering if it's better to add spacer or set 5100 on driver to #2?20240820_111113.jpg 20240820_111641.jpg

    I checked a new Limited in our front parking lot at work, and the springs are the opposite - the spring with more coils is on the driver side.
