    Hi all,

I am having a bit of trouble with my 2000 SR5 4x4. When I get the truck up to highway speeds (55 mph+) I begin to notice a "whirring" noise. The best comparison for this noise that I can provide is that of a jet engine. The noise is faint - I have to really listen for it with the radio off.

In addition to the whirring noise, there is a fair amount of play in the steering. This gets considerably worse at highway speeds, so much so that the steering wheel shakes violently.

From the threads I've read through, it seems like there are potentially a number of issues I am dealing with here - driveshaft, differentials, wheel bearings, steering rack.

I have limited experience working on vehicles, but I am curious to know how I can go about diagnosing the issues I've described above. Thanks!

You need to get the front end into the air and check wheel bearings, ball joints, steering rack, sway bar, etc. If you are unsure, get it into a shop. It will be worth the diagnostic fee at least. Super dangerous if your steering is this bad.
