    Hey guys,

I need some help. Tomorrow I'm going to be looking at a 2020 TRD Pro with 42k miles. It's listed at $46k. Its carfax does claim "minor damage" but it does not show a location of the damage, it does say it happened in 2022 though. Only weird thing I can see in the pictures is that the cover for the jack in the trunk is missing, only a $60 part so no biggie. Is this a fair price given the minor damage? Anything in particular I should be on the lookout for?

    carfax link: https://www.carfax.com/VehicleHistory/p/Report.cfx?partner=DEY_0&vin=JTEBU5JR0L5741002

    Thanks.

That price sounds fair and in line. I looked up nation-wide prices for 2020 TRD Pro's with 40k miles, and the ones in the $40k price range had damage. One was listed for $40k, but was a salvage title. Minor damage is usually light cosmetic. I.E. Scratches & small dents. Nothing major though.

I can't believe the CarFax doesn't list where it was hit? It was probably rear ended though. Ask the dealership, they may have more info. At any rate, carefully inspect the body panels, paint, frame and all under-carriage components. Oh, check the engine compartment for signs of water intrusion.

I’ve added the carfax link in the post in case you, or anyone, wanted to see it. Weird that after its “minor” accident in 2022, no carfax updates until 2024 when it was posted for sale.

Generally, anything below 2K repair is considered minor damage and likely a fender-bender. However, there is still a risk that it wasn't diagnosed or fixed correctly. More so, in any area that has road salt, you have to wonder if that accident and repair created rust starter spot that will become a major issue in a few years.

If you can, find a truck with a clean title. At the very least, expect a discount of about 10% from market value. If you understand body work, then inspect the repair, but this is not something layperson without experience/training could realistically do.

Additionally, take a look at the frame and under body. People tend to take these offroading, which is considered extreme use, without details on that 2K claim, it could have been someone getting stuck on a rock and having a buddy yank them off with a tow strap. Scenario like that, 2K claim would not be minor damage because they would not have fixed out-of-sight damage.

Well, that's not a huge red flag. The owner probably started doing his own oil changes & tire rotations. That means that CarFax doesn't pick up that data. It only picks up data when the vehicle is serviced in some way at a shop that reports the info.

It may have been another DIY'er (like most on this site) that does their own mechanical work. HOWEVER, go over the vehicle carefully in person and ask to see the service records for the truck.

Here's my opinion (and, yes, everyone's got one). The difference between that 2020 and a new 2024 is only about $10K to 12K more. Yes, that's a stretch but you'd get: 4 model years newer with latest tech, new car full warranty, zero miles on it, new tires, possibly choice of color, no hidden damages to it, and you could be the first to fart in the seat.

See if the rust is what you expect, look for slightly mismatched paint/panel gaps that could indicate a less-than-ideal repair (or in the case of one I looked at, paint overspray on the spare, tow wiring cover, mudflaps, yuck!)

And Carfax shows it to have been sitting for a year unsold.

Are you set on getting a Pro? If you aren't, for $46k (and maybe a few thousand more), you can get a brand spanking new 2024 TRD OffRoad or OffRoad Premium. Most of the Pro stuff is highly over rated.

You'll also get a better interest rate on a loan. Used loans are in the high single digits (7 - 9%), but Toyota is offering 4.99% on NEW 4Runners. That could save you a hundred dollars per month and thousands over the entire span of the loan.

Then look at the suspension carefully...then test drive it and get on the pedal good to see response. If interior and leather seats look good, then...it seems like an OK deal.

    Welcome.

For the price that they’re asking, you can get a brand new 2024 ORP in ice cap.
