Upgrading stock spare wheel & tire

    Hello,

    I have a 2024 TRD Pro with alloy wheels and all terrain tires. The spare, however, is an ugly steel wheel with strictly summer road tire. I'd like to upgrade that to one exactly like the regular wheel and tire. Then, I'd like to do a 5 wheel rotation, working in the spare tire.

    Is this a thing? Do people do this? If so, how do I go about getting a spare wheel and tire just like the other 4? Is this something the local tire shop can do for me? I don't want, nor a I able, to put the tire on myself. But, once set up, I should be able to rotate my tires at home without having to take it into the shop every time.

    Any help would be much appreciated!

    It’s a thing, people do indeed do this but I bet it’s a minority of folks that do it.

    You’ll have to find such a wheel for sale, maybe someone changed out their wheels and are selling them on Craigslist, FB Marketplace, etc. And then you buy a tire to match your set - whether at a shop, online (Tire Rack), etc.

    And then get a shop to install it on the wheel and throw it under your truck.

    Only wrinkle I can think of is how TPMS works with that scheme, but I don’t know enough to know off-the-top-of-my-head

    I purchased a brand new TRD Pro wheel and a new Falken 285/70 and installed a new TPMS for my spare about 3+ years ago as the factory spare does not have a TPMS. The 4Runner does not recognize the TPMS in the spare when installed. I did a couple 5 tire rotations and then gave up after I changed my wheels to Methods.
    I still have a half used AT3W on a new Pro rim with the TPMS and just do a normal 4 wheel rotation with my Baja Boss AT’s.
    Having a matching size spare tire is important. I wouldn’t do a 5 tire rotation again because it was too expensive the route I took, and some tire places don’t do the rotation properly. Plus you have to remember which tire was moved out from the spare and how it was entered in to the rotation, so you can be sure the shop does it correctly the next time.

    Update: I ordered a new wheel/tire/TPMS sensor from Toyota. They got everything set up for me and when I picked it up, the valve stem is made of aluminum, not black rubber like the rest of my wheel. Good grief. Why on earth did they do that? Now I have an oddball I want replaced. Is there a way to replace the valve stem on a TPMS sensor without having to break the bead and go through that whole rigamarole?

    I am doing the same, full size spare. There are 3 dif part numbers for the TPMS, they clearly ordered the wrong one. My '23 PRO has the aluminum stems. Im guessing your '24 has the older style PRO rims and therefore has the rubber stems. You would need to pop the bead and replace the complete TPMS unit.
