Interchangeable alternators for a 19994runner limited

I'm trying to figure out why truck keeps needing a jump. So we took a meter and tested the alternator which came back as a whopping 5.3. Now, on a right budget and also for the most part unable to find 4runners at any local scrap uards im curious what if any interchangeable alternatots for my 1999 four runner plz and thank you

 

Pull the alt and look at the brushes. If they are gone, you can try just replacing the brushes:

If the voltage regulator is bad you can replace that too but I have never done it or sourced the voltage regulator:

What engine do you have? If it's the 3.4L, I would imagine any 3.4L alternator in the junkyard is going to have an alt that should bolt up. You may have to swap the pulley.

Maybe someone here knows interchange specifics.

It's the 1999 Toyota limited edition 4runner, about 150k miles
Kinda actually seems like the truck is trying to take a crap all the way around, I don't even dare driving it on the freeway that much due to the fact that the freaking hood has been popping up on me also.


I really would like to know the best way figure out whether or not it is the battery or the alternator that needs replaced

 

When the car runs, put your multimeter over the battery terminals. Should be at least 13.5v when running for a good alternator.

Otherwise, take the car into Autozone and have them test the battery. If it tests bad, you can have them put in a new battery and then after that, they can test the charging system and you cna go from there.

TOYOTA alternators RARELY go bad. But they do wear out the brushes which can be replaced like the video I posted above.
