Why is it there are so few custom subwoofer boxes for the 5th gen? I've seen the Taco Tunes box which looks like the best option out there, but with it I can't use my factory cargo cover. I also don't like that it blocks access to the jack.

Ideally I'd love to see a custom enclosure that fits a single 12, maybe 6 inch mounting depth, that sat on the passenger side wheel well. I know the outlets there may end up being lost or have to be relocated but I'd gladly make that concession.

There are literally dozens of boxes for Jeeps. And JL made a fantastic option for the 4th gen 4runner, why not the 5th?

Anyone here made their own? I haven't attempted anything like that in a couple of dozen years but if I can't find anything I like I may end up trying to make my own...

So, I'm about to start my own custom sub box build since I can't find anything that does what I want it to do. Single JL 12W1, it will be about 7" deep to clear the sub and about 1.1-1.2 cu ft sealed if I'm doing the math right.

Passenger side wheel will, I will relocate the stock 12v and cig lighter to the side of the enclosure. It will also clear the stock cargo cover.

I can't find any pics or videos of anything like this on a 5th gen (I have a 2016 TP). Anyone seen anything similar on a 5th gen?

Same as you I looked and looked for a subwoofer solution. Eventually I decided to build this.

Looks nice. And dog friendly, which is also important. What are you running?

I have been looking as well and came across an individual that makes the box, 4runner stealth subwoofer enclosure for 5th gent on eBay. I stumbled across him on a few runner forums. I have not purchased yet but have been in discussion with them, not my number 1 priority right now. They make custom boxes that hide behind panels. Might be an option, take a look.

I actually came across this as well, and it looks to be a decent solution but I want something to fit a 12" sub, that one is only for a 10". But it looks as nice as anything else I've seen.

Under the rear driver side seat. There are pictures in the thread I linked earlier.

I'll be doing an entire custom stereo in mine soon. I may do a build thread on it if I can get enough interest. I'm gonna be doing an Android auto deck, all the speakers (except for the ones in the tailgate. Those will be disconnected) will be replaced, and I'll be building custom ported box w/amp rack.
I'll also be using 2 Rockford Fosgate amps to power the front speakers and the sub.

Got tired of no aftermarket support so Googled how to fibreglass. It's functional and maybe one year I'll clean it up and smooth out the finish

I built this one for mine. It also doubles as the amp rack. The box is double walled on the amp rack side to prevent any vibration issues. Love it, care to share what video/technique you used? Want to do the exact same with a 12" alpine I have lying around.

JL and Latoyrunner (I think he stopped making them after JL copied or he sold the design to them) make boxes for the useless store area on the passenger side. I have dual 8s from OEM Audio + but you have to buy the whole system.

It's been a while, but I essentially googled custom subwoofer fibreglass diy and any of the older car audio forums all say the same thing:

Tape off the entire area, put tin foil on the back side of the box (in the cubby area) so the fibreglass sticks to that and not the plastic. Router a speaker ring, use wood dowels to suspend it in air using hot glue, use fleece to go from the speaker ring to the rest of the box. Nothing fancy, just decided to do it. I did put some wood in the cubby hole as the backing of parts of my box and that also served as a place to attach my wood dowels to as well.

I had cut to cut out the support brace in that cubby. The fit is friction tight but I used Velcro on the backside of the box and 4runner cubby as extra security. Box hasn't moved since I shoved it in.

Speaker wire runs through box hole into wheel well trim piece and to my amp under passenger seat. No speaker terminal on box, just wired continuously from speaker to amp.

If you tape out the cubby and then fibreglass, the fibreglass will stick to the tape and the tape will stick to the 4runner plastic and your mold won't pop out. So tape, but also tin/aluminum foil so your mold will pop out.

My hatch is well used so I just used bedliner to paint vs carpet, sanding for smooth paint, etc.

    Edit: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.instructables.com/How-to-Make-a-Fiberglass-Subwoofer-Box/?amp_page=true

Edit 2: I used packing peanuts to figure out my volume of the box.

This is all it took. Easy to remove if needed. Gave me my bottom end without having everything removed. Does not effect anything I put in my 4runner. IMG_5335.jpg

Bump... I'm still on the hunt. It seems like the JL Audio Stealthbox is the best for a pre-amde sub box. I have never built any subwoofer box (can't imagine doing a fiber glass), but looks like it would be worthwhile project to learn.... Still on the fence for the JL. Best price I found online was ~$1400

I had this built for my 3rd Gen. Held a 10" sub. Was a good compromise to fit a sub but not take up much cargo space. Any competent audio shop could fabricate something like this.
