    Hi all,

I have a 2024 4Runner SR5 Premium that will arrive in a few weeks. I plan to have two 'break in' oil changes (say 500 mi and 1500 mi?) before I take it to the dealer for the standard 5K ToyotaCare service. EDIT: I'm now adding 5000 mi to this too since dealer doesn't change until 10K under ToyotaCare.

What parts do I need to order exactly for this? I assume the filter is one. And of course the oil itself.

But what about the filter cap and gasket (the 'element kit' part# 04152?)? The drain plug ring? Anything else?

    Many thanks in advance!

    Here's a diagram from Partsouq:

    Welcome to the forum,

Part# 04152 will get you all of what is required for the oil filter change, Drain plug gasket (not shown) is an optional purchase.

Will be a lot more posts with additional information incoming regarding this topic. This topic is brought up very often so you can also search for additional suggestions/comments.

As stated, the filter comes with all orings and things related to the filter change. We will need the wrench thing for filter, can’t remember the brand but a good quality aluminum one is available online. Get the drain plug gasket and you are good to go.

Many thanks! Is the 'drain plug gasket' anywhere in the pic (or do you have a pic/part#)?

Not in the pic as the drain plug and oil pan it goes into isn’t pictured.

When I bought filters from the dealer it included a drain plug gasket/crush washer in the box, you can crack the box and see what’s in it easily at the counter

MotivX is the favored filter wrench but I personally make do with an auto parts store special.

Do you have the part# specifically for this 'drain plug gasket'?

Is this different from the 15643A in the picture (referred to as the drain plug 'o-ring') or the 'smaller ring' depicted in 04152? I'm unclear where this thing is and for which area.

Yes, 15643A is for the filter housing, which also has a drain plug. It is the same smaller ring depicted in 04152.

The main drain is not pictured.

You’ll be replacing the filter, two soft o-rings and one metal washer (the drain plug gasket) in an oil change.

(but it also comes in different materials if you go aftermarket)

do you mean 04152YZZA4*? 04152(yzza1) is also for Tacomas and not interchangeable as far as I can tell.

    *edit I mean …A5, not 4

5K is fine for the first change. The oil filter comes with everything you need except for the drain crush washer.

    Toyotacare is 10K changes.

You want to get oil changed as soon as possible, as they don't do any factory break-in.

Here is what came out from mine at about 500 miles oil change.

    • The owner's manual says engine break-in is at 1000 miles. Any other value is make-believe.
    • The owner's manual also says to avoid towing in the first 500 miles - that's the general industry number for differential gear break-in, so you should change the rear diff oil at 500 miles.
    • The dealer doesn't change the oil at 5k, just a tire rotation, because the normal oil change interval is 12mo/10k: https://assets.sia.toyota.com/publications/en/omms-s/T-MMS-244Runner/pdf/T-MMS-244Runner.pdf

Thanks for the info. I now plan on taking mine new 2024 in for an oil change...on my dime...at 1,000 miles?

OP - you seem very unsure about the parts, and I will make an assumption that you have never done an oil change on a Toyota with the cartridge filter. You would do well to look up a few videos on YouTube about the process. Having the right tools is extremely important. Also, if you mess up placing the o rings on the filter housing it can have catastrophic consequences for your engine. Good luck!

There is also a clip on the side of the filter housing that needs to be preyed outward so the filter can spin. ( I think the clip is there to prevent housing form loosing up on its own?) I bent this clip when doing the first oil change, and I also had to pry or tap the original factory crush washer from the oil pan. I did my first oil change at 1250 miles and did find some metal particles in the filter.

I never intended to do this on my own. I plan to have the correct parts and drop them off at service shop a few of times before the first due ToyotaCare (10 first oil change).

As of now, I have all the parts confirmed except for that one thing which is the 'drain plug gasket'.
Exactly why I'm doing two 'break-in' changes. I will now add 5K too since ToyotaCare doesn't oil change at 5K.

Roger. Does the Toyota parts center at the dealer sell these? I want to keep the parts genuine before my first ToyotaCare service with oil change -- I see now 10K is the first oil change not 5K...yikes.

Yes, and you should also change the rear diff oil at 500 miles. The rear diff has no filter, just a magnet on the drain plug, so it arguably benefits more from an oil change after break-in.

Interesting. I could search but off the top of your head what kind of oil and how much for the rear differential?

^3 qts will do it. Get 4 qts if you DIY and expect to spill some  75W-85, 75W-90, 75W-120, etc. from the big box stores all work. I used 75W-140 last time, overkill but I had them on hand.

When my 2017 had its first engine oil change at 1,500 miles, I had mechanic save first catch out of drain plug in a clean clear plastic wide mouth bottle. The oil was BLACK. Had new filter installed then too. I saved this oil on my garage shelf before finally pouring it into a collection jug for disposal. WOW, there was black sediment in the bottom that required wiping out!
I am glad it was replaced early, of course I paid the $$.

Some dealers will do two oil changes for you at the odometer marks of your preference. After two, they are on your dime.

Does anyone know if the 2024 4Runner SR5 Premium comes with the plastic housing or a metal one?

Also, for documentation's sake here's a good video on changing the oil upto the 2023 models (probably the 2024's too):

Plastic! And no need to be replaced for an aluminum housing! Check car nuts on YT the guy is explaining tons of real accurate info on Toyota! 0 BS! Especially about that housing also why there is no need to swap it!

Break in oil changes are a waste of time. Just change your oil with any brand of synthetic every 10k miles. Your engine will last far longer than you will keep the vehicle. Guaranteed

I did the engine oil @ 1000miles for peace of mind, i did watch this guy below, very smart and real data to backup what is saying. This is a one time 60$ ish early oil change for the entire life of my 4R, so nothing on the big scale of my purchase, IMO. https://youtu.be/X4424Q5lLR8?si=-kJ5Meas3svc3uT-
